Agreed, these dipsticks suck. I get the best results by checking the oil after the car sits overnight. You don't have much "tracer" oil above the actual level line. It's an easier read.

+1 OP. It seems as though the bend smears or wipes off some of the oil making it difficult to read.

I look for the wet line were the oil stops and the dry dipstick starts. Sometimes I have to flip it over to see exactly were its at.

I totally have the same problem. You will notice there are three holes in the dipstick near the hash marks. I think you can tell if oil bubbles in the holes or not thus indicating its approximate level.

LOL, I can't believe this is up. I just changed my oil the other night in a friend's back yard and I couldn't see a damn thing! It's been sitting for a couple of days now so hopefully I'll be able to read it today. I can't believe we actually have this problem. I guess it's time to start researching some aftermarket dipsticks because I honestly hate having to wait overnight to see if I'm at the correct level.

After my first oil change at the dealer, I spent several minutes trying to read oil level, and discovered the three holes worked great. Has anyone noticed smoke coming out of the dipstick hole on a hot engine? Mine has this and it is worrying me really bad. Is it normal?

Which brings the question, how often do you guys check your oil. I know I'm guilty of not Checking it as often as I should, but I do change my oil every 3k miles
