Just put Camaro in storage until spring... Due for oil change... Do now or spring?
I had to put my car away a little early this year. I am going in to have rotator cuff surgery and it is to the point where I am having problems shifting my car. This is where you auto guys can jump in and say this is why autos are better. Anyways, I am due for an oil change and my question is... Do I do it now or wait until spring? I have always done it at the end of the year regardless, but on the flip side I have heard that oils can expire. Is there any truth to that? I will probably change it anyway, but just wondering others thoughts on this whole oil life breakdown.

Do it now. You don't want all those contaminates sitting in there all winter.

I am no expert, but I always wait till spring. My thought is that the oil will accumulate minute amounts of moisture while the car sits for several months, therfore you change the old oil and the moisture with it. I am probably wrong though. Someone with more knowledge should be in here soon.

mr 45th is correct. Amoung those contaminates is sulfiuric acid....you do NOT want it etching the bearings and journals all winter. Never store an engine with dirty oil in it.

When I lived in Michigan I use to have a business prepping Corvettes for winter storage. Here are the steps I use to take. Clean car inside and out making sure that any moisture has evaporated before covering the vehicle. Use a good leather conditioner and vinyl conditioner. Change the oil & filter at the storage location with a warm engine. Lube all lube points. Remove the spark plugs and "fog all the cylinders, reinstall the spark plugs. Place the vehicle on jack stands and remove the tires and wheels, store them in a cool dry location (also makes it harder for a thief to steal the vehicle). I reinstall the lugs so I don’t loose them. Top off all fluids but leave room for expansion. Check coolant to make sure it's freeze point is below the coldest it will get at the storage location. Lube all rubber seals with a good rubber conditioner. Put a moisture elimination pad to remove any moisture inside the vehicle, as well as the trunk. Remove battery, again so it doesn’t freeze (and again makes it harder to steal) If the storage vehicle is in a remote location I also placed rodent poison around the vehicle, but make sure your domestic pets don’t get into it. Cover vehicle and kiss it good night!
When getting the vehicle out of storage, Change the oil and filter again, check all fluid levels especially brake fluid, inspect the ground underneath the vehicle for any leaks. Some times the seals will swell so don’t be to concerned, but make sure you check all levels. After hooking the battery back up remove the ECM fuse and crank over engine a few times to get the oil back up into the top of the engine. Check the Air filter for any nests as well as the intake duct work and exhaust. Once you reinstall the fuse start vehicle while it is still on floor jacks, and pump brakes until the pedal is firm. Put the vehicle in gear and make sure the drivetrain is working correctly. Let the vehicle come up to warm operating temperature and check all fluids again. The fogging oil may cause the vehicle to smoke for a few minutes but it will go away. Drive away and enjoy another Camaro Season! I don’t think I forgot anything, but if I did I apologize in advance. |

If you do the jacket and thing make sure the stands are on suspension components. It's not good for it to hang for long periods of time. It's not meant to hang without any weight on it.

Moisture will not accumulate in the oil pan unless the temperature changes causes condensation in the garage.
