Arrow ECM Tune Questions

Folks,

As I am a computer programmer by trade I find the subject of ECM tuning very cool. I had a Jet Chip for my 98 Trans Am and HyperTech for my 99 Trans Am.

I live in New Brunswick, Canada (rural) and not sure if there is anyone I can trust close to do a proper ECM tune on my (coming soon) 2010 Camaro SS. I read a lot of forum posts on this subject and most lead to “find a good shop to do it”. It seems to really take advantage of most mods a “tune” is in order.

My dream is have a black box that someone can program for “My Mods” and send it to me which I can use to load the tune and unload the tune when I take the SS to the dealer for service. Am I smoking bad dope on this idea?

I am planning simple mods which include CAI and a Corsa Exhaust Kit for the first year, so the tuning should be “simple” right?

So all that to ask the following questions:
  1. Anyone know of a shop in Atlantic Canada to do a proper ECM for my mods?
  2. Is there a company which I can tell them my mods and they can send me a box (like the old HyperTechs) which I can use to “tune” it myself, and “detune” when I need to take it to the dealer?
  3. Should I really search out a good tuner?

Thanks in advance for all your answers and input.

~Ryan

Best bet for you is to buy a 2nd ECU with the tune you need and then pop the stock one in for the dealer service. MANY poeple do this with a variety of vehicles. Contact "Butch", a dealer for Wester's tune in Mass. He will go out of his way to help you with this whole process. He can be found on the denalitrucks.com website forum section. A 2nd ECU isn't all that expensive as you might think.

i would defiantly get a second ecu and just have the tune on that one, because if you take it to the dealer they can tell if you have ever tuned the ecu and can void the warranty even if you don't still have the tune still in there.

but if you just swap the stock one back in they will never know and your warranty stays

I thought, it wasn't that easy to swap back and forth. I thought you had to do some type of crank senor reset that only the dealer can do.

PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.

You can do that with a DashHawk very easily. I have an extra ECM for my G8 and it's an easy swap, less than 10 minutes. That's just because I fat hands. LOL

I talked to Andy with ADM Performance and had lots of questions for him. He was extremely helpful. He took the time to answer all my questions and give me advice on which way to go with my Performance upgrades.I would highly recommend anyone that is considering doing any Performance upgrades or Tuning to give him a call.

As long as you do minor mods on the hardware, heads, cam, etc, you can probably get away with a factory ECM if you need warranty work. However, if you go a little further with the mods you may not get the car to start or run or if it runs it will be very rough etc. This happned many times with my Vette friends that thought they would outsmart the dealers. Just be conservative and you are OK. Don't expect the dealer to rapair your problems caused by mods or inept tunes created by inexperienced tuners. Think everything thru first before you jump into the mod/tweek craze and have a MASTER plan to a final end. Good Luck, we all have a great car/platform to play with.

I talked to Andy was well, great guy. Soon as my Camaro comes in I think Andy's solution is the way I am going.

Thanks everyone for your input,
