When will it stop? I can't believe how many people would agree with this.

Alcohol and texting while driving kill - Period! I've already spoken on this forum about drinking & driving and being involved in an accident with a fatality. Every time I bring it up, I open myself to ridicule. So be it! The message still needs to get out.

A local 19 year old girl was involved in a head on collision that resulted in the death of two passengers in the other car. It was determined that she had been texting at the time of the accident and was sentenced 10 years prison for each death. 20 years total for a simple 19 year old who had never been in any trouble with the law. What a horrible, horrible event not only for the family of the victims but also for the 19 year old girl and her family.

I agree with Dtrimpi87 that there is too much government intrusion in our lives these days. In this country today, EVERY cellular call or text and all internet activity (all of it) is filtered thru the National Security Agency. There are over 100,000 surveillance cameras across this nation that also are fed thru the NSA with facial recognition software. Since this country has converted to digital television, the federal government has tapped into EVERY DVR operating in this country and erased a recorded show on FEMA camps. In an instant, the show was gone, but can still be seen on You Tube. The government also did the same thing with Kindles; that is, they erased two particular books from every Kindle owner in this country. All this can be found on the internet. So, whether you like it or not, you're being censored, watched, and monitored 24/7.

However, to chime in on OP's post, when it comes to driver safety, I have no problems with a ban on all cell phone usage while driving. Speed kills! Alcohol kills! Cell phones kill!

Btw, good thread OP..........

What does this have to do with technology?

Police see someone texting, pull their ass over and ticket them. Don't need a half a mil grant to do that.

.... and police should be banned from typing on their computer while driving.

I had a cop car the other day drifting over into my lane, almost hits me until I blast my horn. From my SUV higher up seating position, I could see that he was typing on his dash computer.... while going highway speed. Then continued on... tailgating people, changing lanes without signalling. I respect most cops.... that one was a doughnut pounding worthless POS.

Hands are not the problem here... only marginal selfish driver would try to communicate with someone who was not present. It is the brain power that this takes that cause the distraction. There have been many studies done. Your are for more distracted having a conversation via a phone than you are when the person is riding along with you.

Want to see how bad distracted driving had become? Climb on the back of a harley and go for a ride.

This is not a question of liberty! We can own guns but can't fire them off in the air in our neighborhoods.

This "what if it is an emergency" stuff has been driving me crazy since cell phones came out. How in the hell did we make it without them?!

I am all for technology that inhibits selfishness behind the wheel. It is bad enough I have to help pay for heart surgeries and such for people who's lifestyles are just as reckless and texting and driving.

I think texting while driving is very dangerous.

* Unfortunately I've seen some police dept's use this more as a extra source of revenue. It's all about the money...

I'd like to see the $550,000 go to an education campaign. Drill it into our heads how dangerous it is. I personally don't think handing out tickets teaches anything, anyway. It was drilled into our heads how important seat belts are. Seems like the majority use seat belts now. Everytime a driver makes me say, "WTF!" they are doing something with a phone.

No, but they also don't put cameras in your backyard to make sure, now do they? It's absolutely a question of liberty.

I agree with the idea of a texting ban. It's impossible to enforce though. I'll never consent to spying though. It's already nauseating enough how much the government tracks us. I'll never get behind more.

I am sure we are on the same side. And Jefferson is one of my all time favorites.

The Yahoo! used the word spying to incite... observing is another word. Remember several years ago when a neighborhood got together and started taping the activities of prostitutes and their johns? The problem was cleaned up in just a few days. Liberty is not just a general idea, it has a specific application.

Anyone who would engage in lawless and reckless activity that creates increased hazards and burden for the general public and then try to cloak themselves in liberty must belong to the ACLU.

I didn't see anything about technology. Just traditional police observation.

the proper way to handle this is very simple.

most if not all phones that are out today have GPS in them, then have accelerometers and gyroscopes, they have the ability to know how fast the "phone" is moving..

so it is a simple matter of programming the O/S on the phone to prevent texting if the GPS/accelerometers in the phones detect that the phone is moving at a given speed.

no different than the GPS in most cars that lock you out above a given speed.

So you can't text on a bus or train either?
