Critical thinking skills are not taught, in the home or in school.. it is unbelievable to me some of the things I see other parents at my childs school say and do...

I constantly drill into my kid, think, use your brain, before you act don't just act THINK first.

IF I DO THIS, THIS WILL BE THE RESULT..

The other part of that is sometimes a kid has to feel the repercussion of their actions, not to the point of endangering themselves of course, but everyone wants to coddle children and not hold them responsible for their actions...

So they grow up not taking responsibility, and passing the blame to someone else.

then the lawyers have to make laws to protect them from themselves because no one taught them critical thinking skills and responsibility.

I love that line, unfortunately there are far to many people that go to jail, get out and do it all over again.

I know of 2 from high school that are doing life on the installment plan..

8-12 charges in 30 years, in jail for a year or two, out for a couple months, catch a new case and do it all over again, and it always for the same crimes..

People that text and drive totally suck. It's dangerous as hell, and people can't even drive [around here] WITHOUT texting! Keep your eyes on the road and your hands off your phone. If it's that important, hit your hands-free calling button and make a call...

Since the "technology" in question is having spotters look into your car to catch you texting, I voted yes.

I see these people all the time. Every other driver is texting, talking with a phone to their ear or some other thing.

The only thing that makes this difficult for Police to prove is because you can see Police cars a mile away.

Have the Police drive around in an unmarked cars with two high mounted video cameras facing out the rear passenger windows (down into the cars) and another camera filming the plates.

Bam...National debt paid off.

To answer the question above though...Hmmm. I don't think law enforcement should be effortless. Legally enforced restrictive technology will always become a rights issue. Perhaps, cameras could be installed in the cars of repeat offenders? Sorta like a car start breathalyzer for DUI offenders.

Personally, I'd like to see texting while driving and most other distractions banned completely. I ride motorcycle, and I have a hard enough time being seen even with a neon jacket. And it never fails that the moron drifting over the lane or cutting me off is on the phone or eating or reading the map or some other stupid nonsense.

PLEASE people, just DRIVE. And nobody thinks it's them. Everyone you talk to says, they have no problems multi-tasking while on the road. Well here's a news flash, I've ridden with you and NO you can't!

Sorry, this is obviously a hot-button issue for me. But to answer the question posted. I think there should be some way to detect/prevent this. Not sure I care for the idea of spies on the overpasses, but there does need to be some way to enforce the laws out there. Maybe something similar to the iPod jack. If you want to use the phone in the car, make it be plugged in and only operational through Bluetooth or voice commands.

First I would like to apologize if I missed the technology that the OP was talking about. I looked but I did not find it. I only found mention of the use of manual transmissions and I'm pretty sure Chevy is utilizing that technology.

As for the road spy that looks to see if your texting, i don't see how this is a problem. As a society we are constantly ask each other to keep an eye-out for terrorist, or to participate in neighbor hood watches. We constantly watch each other.

What it sounds like to me is that some of you are madthat someone is going to get paid to watch.

How are you supposed to be able to tell the difference between texting and using your phone as a GPS or an ipod. (Mapquest ect). You still have to "touch" the screen with your fingers ect to check roads and what not. Just as you would with a regular GPS on the windshield or w/e. Are we supposed to ban all technology in cars? Even in dash stereo and radio equipment? It all goes off the same concept. Say i want to change a song on my touchscreen radio... what am i doing? Taking my eyes off the road to look for / click on a song i want. What i would i be doing on my phone that's in the same spot? Same thing. One's illegal and ones not? I say to people who want texting banned.. great i agree, but if you ban one thing everything should be banned. If you don't want your safety compromised on the road, don't drive. People will always do stupid things, there is no changing that. Its a known fact that humans will break the law no matter what law is in place. There are tons of things that people do in cars that are just as bad as texting. For example i saw some guy 2 weeks ago reading the newspaper and drinking coffee at the same time in mid morning traffic. Is he a moron? yes, but he was doing it. Fact is, everything besides driving that people do while driving is dangerous, cell phone gps or radio related or not, and unless you ban everything involving technology or just not paying attention to the road aheadyou're not solving much. I think the whole idea of paying people to look for "texting" is a huge joke and a massive waste of money. Spend it elsewhere.

I live in Md and work in Baltimore City. On a daily basis I drive 1 of 2 of the worst highways in the country. The Baltimore/DC corridor has been rated as having the worst drivers in the country. Some of the crap I see people doing while driving is mind boggling. I can only speak of things in my state and know we passed a hands free law and no texting laws. However it was left out of the law that the LEO had to obey by the law also. You see them texting, on Facebook on the in car computer and doing all kinds of stuff with total disregard of anyone around them. The rebuttal was that they are properly trained to do such stuff. BS. In my area some of the worst drivers are LEO themselves. In my state and area how can we rely on the LEO to do what the OP's post suggests when the law is written to contradict what theyre supposed to do. Whats good for one is good for all IMHO.

$5 says the people that voted yes took the time to read the article and determined that the OP's title is misleading. The people who voted no didn't read the article and think that they need to bust out their tinfoil hat...

When I got my drivers license back in 72 the drivers manual warned us against distracted driving, we were to adjust our mirrors, heaters and radio BEFORE we began driving so we could pay attention to what was going on around us on the road. This basic concept should still hold true, we don't want people who are distracte d driving down the road whether it's tuning the radio or talking to grandma.
Before cel phones, I used to play a road-racing game in which the vehicle was reaching speeds of up to 200 mph. I learned while playing that game I could NOT talk to someone on my home phone whilst racing the game, I'd crash every time. As cel phones have become so popular I always remember just how easy it was to lose control while trying to focus on a conversation while driving.
Someone else posted that when he sees someone on the phone he honks at them. I personally agree that a strong grass roots movement would have a greater impact than government agencies spying on drivers. If we all started honking when we see someone on a cel phone texting or talking it would shame the perp into hanging up plus if someone is honking he can't hear what his caller is saying.
To those of you with emergencies... until cel phones came along we all had to wait til we got home and check our messages. Until answering machines came along, if we weren't right there when the phone rang we missed out totally. Before phones... well you get the picture. We survived.
Bottom line, I don't agree with surveillance although I have nothing to hide - I don't text and drive because it's stupid to text to someone you could call and talk to! I don't dial and drive because I know from my gaming experience just how quickly something can go wrong. If there's an emergency and I simply must talk or text, I pull over!
Final reason I personally do not text and drive is I need my reading glasses to see the small text and with those reading glasses on, everything more than 3 feet in front of me becomes a giant blur.

i think we need more laws to protect people... like people who ride motorcycles. they need to ban those. bc if you lay it over or get hit, there will be people getting hurt. i know its off topic, but we need to outlaw energy drinks and fast food. we need to protect these people from themselves.

just in case you didnt catch it, that was "sarcasm"

sounds just like a lot of some people's views on this topic.

Might be worse than driving drunk if you take your eyes off the road for a long period of time but other than that, there is no way. I know 2 people who got in accidents driving drunk and neither of them remember even being in the car. (yes they are both morons, thank god no one was killed) So i dont think sending a text is worse than that. Also i can text without even looking at the phone (muscle mem) Not saying that i do, but saying that its def worse that drunk driving is a joke imo. They are both bad and neither should happen in my opinion but still, its def not worse unless like i said you look down for long periods of time and have no idea where you are.
