Test Drive, no mufflers.

So I JUST bought a GoPro Hero HD 2 the day before they announced the Hero 3, which I also pre-ordered lol, but anyway, this was just a test video, there are dead spaces where it's just driving but, anyway, the only mod to my car is I had the mufflers removed, which I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend.

Hopefully the video backs me up.

Sounds awesome! Is there any drone on the highways? I really want to do this but have a few hesitations. So all you did is have a straight pipe welded on huh?

Yup, just had them weld on a pipe in place of the muffler, everything else (cats, etc.) are still intact. The drone...I wouldn't even call it a drone, I've had it for 2.5 years and had this done about two weeks after I got it (I was borderline terrified lol) and have not regretted it once. The one thing I will say is, if you have a stick, like I do, then if you let it wind down (which I would best describe as, say you are going about 30, in third or fourth gear, and you go down a hill, and you pick up speed above what you were already travelling) it will make noise, not a big deal, and technically you shouldn't be in gear at that point anyway. But that is the ONLY thing that I can imagine bothering you.

Like I said 2.5 years and I love it. SUPER cheap and better than any aftermarket exhaust I've heard.

A couple things I would add. 1) Having listened to it again I would say it does a good job of recreating the road noise to exhaust noise ratio, i.e. the "drone" from the exhaust while driving is louder than the road noise, but not by a large margin, it is mostly noticeable when accelerating. 2) I did not speed AT ALL during this clip. Important to point out. I stayed within the speed limit at all times. This mod gives you good noise, without requiring you to be stupid.

If you are super sensitive to drone, Id have reservations, but I'd have just as many reservations about any aftermarket exhaust that increases the volume by an appreciable amount. If you aren't sensitive to it, my honest advice is, just make sure to tell the muffler shop to leave enough piping to reconnect them if you don't like it. It shouldn't be difficult for them as it just means cutting them off further back. And that way you can keep the exhaust and if you really hate it, you can pay another $125 or so to have them put back on. Still MUCH less than just about any aftermarket exhaust.

I think GoPro's are pretty cool, I'm very interested to see how well the Hero3 performs. I expected nearly useless audio, even with the case this is still pretty awful conditions (the opening on the non waterproof case are on the back, which in the direction this was facing meant it was right in the airstream) but it performed well enough that I think anything short of a separate mic would fare about the same. Video quality is actually a little better than the YouTube video (less blocky), overall very impressed. Just waiting for the Hero3 to come in before I bother taking it to a good driving road and doing this for real.
