--Important read-- Engine Oil Tech
This is something that everyone needs to read, if you are racing your car or just taking it to car shows your engine oil is the life blood that keeps your car running.
The more aggressive your setup, or the harder you drive your car, the oil you use becomes even more important. Over the last 10 years, We have recorded approximately 10 failed lifters from customers in the US with our cam kits. We sell on average 150-200 cam kits per year, and more cams by themselves. 6 of these have been in the last 12 months. Doing testing and research with oil companies, Comp Cams, and also with some of our partners in the turbo production the newer 'EPA approved' oils are reducing the anti wear additive packages more so every year and are increasing the amount of detergents in the oil. While this might sound good to keep the inside of your engine clean it is not helping on keeping the oil protecting like it should. That is why it is more important now more so than ever for those of you tracking your car, installing bigger cams, turbo's and superchargers that you run an oil that will hold up and protect your investment. With any of our cam kits we highly suggest the use of a quality oil with a high content of Zinc and Phosphorus. For those racing the car, a racing oil should be used. Do keep in mind most racing oils are 100% detergent free and will need to be changed frequently. Some oils to use would be RedLine, Amsoil, Joe Gibb, Brad Penn, Valvoline VR1 series. Very good information here guys. Again, this needs to be read by everyone. We too have came across more cam/lifter issues in the last 12 months.
Use a quality oil, and keep it changed frequently. Zach |

What will be the effect on cars with stock CATs when using higher Zinc and Phosphorus oils??
I use Valvoline Racing oil in my race car but it says on the label not for use with CATs. The VR1 oil is a street oil and has the API SM rating on it that I think removes all the Zinc. Not sure if its any better than any other SM rated oil.

The last 2 parts to my motor came in this week, the windage tray and pick up tube. HKE should finish it this week....after 7 1/2 months.
I am breaking it in using Joe Gibbs BR, break in oil Plan on running the Joe Gibbs HR3 synthetic 15w50 after that. Expensive but so is my motor. I dont have cats, hope the O2 sensors arent affected, /this oil has 1247 ppm zinc and 1157 ppm phosphorous. Total anti-wear is 2408 ppm

Takes many miles for it to start to affect the cats or O2's. I would not be real worried especcially if you have a properly functioning catchcan to keep the oil out of the intake air charge.

A friend of mine is a salesman for Royal Purple - industrial side. He said the reason for a lot of the changes, (reducing anti-wear additives & uping detergent), is because of EPA mandates. Anybody else hearing that kind of thing?

I ran Royal Purple in my Whipple'd LS3 for 2 oil changes and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Have switched over to Amsoil V-Rod and not only am I ending up with far less residue in my RX Monster catch can; the Amsoil is remaining far cleaner.

Casper, yes, that is why M1 has reduced it and many others....I am a fan of RP purple ice & gear lube, syn trans fluid, but wont use the oil yet....cant get the guts to try it again.
