Is it illegal

Hey guys, I'm wondering if it is illegal under California law to mount your ipad at front seat? I'm thinking to mount my ipad3 in my car and planning to mount it to the ac so it will go down covering the radio (will not obstruct winshield at all)... Anybocy know? Thanks

The problem is you should be paying attention to the road not the IPad!! If people paid as much attention as they do to texting or playing with the latest app there would be alot less accidents or death's. You operating a machine with people all around you! Its driving impaired almost like a drunk!!!

Cops wouldn't agree with you. Why not ask a cop? They would tell you yes or no or call the local police station. I have done that before but you will get different opinions because not all cops know all the laws

It's not illegal. Its just like having a navigation system in the car. If you figure out how to text from it then it would be illegal. Its just like a cell phone. You can't have it in your hand texting or making a phone call but if your looking at a map it's fine. Weird how things work huh?

You're already getting different opinions.

Isn't it illegal to have a lcd screen for dvds mounted up front? How is this Ipad any different (I know you say GPS)?

everything in CA is illegal, even if it is legal you may get a ticket from someone who interprets the law as saying it is illegal, then you will have to fight it in court... that being said i imagine the only way you would get a ticket is if you got pulled over for something else, and were a dick and they are writing up everything... but anything can happen

Yep I've been getting diff answers too that's why I'm asking you guys here hoping someone will have solid answer. I am confused because some people said you can't have it if it's on top of your dashboard because it will be blocking the windshield due to its size, that's why I'm wondering if I hang it lower so it looked like regular flatscreen in 2013 camaros... Then again I've been mounting and using my samsung galaxy s3 for my gps and music source and so far no cop complained...

Well, there's this:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm which has rules for obstruction of view

and there's this:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21701.htm
which implies that if you are distracted in any way and it interferes with your driving, like playing with your phone or ipad, you'll get a ticket.

There are two build threads in the audio section where iPads were installed over the radios. It isn't cheap. If you can do it, go for it. Just don't watch porn while driving.

According to CA state law if you have a GPS unit in the car it must be mounted in the lower left corner of the windshield. My buddy literally had a cop tell him to take his GPS down because it wasn't in lower left.

It is not illegal as long as you are not watching a show (movie, podcast, youtube etc), or texting while driving. No different than having an indash nav system that is also a DVD player. This is assuming it is mounted low enough that it does not obstruct your vision out the windshield.

If you have a portable Nav unit that sticks to the windshield, it must be mounted lower left or lower right of the windshield.
