What is more important...time between oil changes or mileage?
Just curious what people think. What affects the oil more? Time passing or mileage?

Miles, to a point. GM specifically says in the owner's manual to change the oil once/year regardless of mileage.
However, if a person drives the car the 'average' of 12k miles in a year and goes by the oil life monitor they will change the oil more often than that (and many ppl ignore the monitor and change it even more often).

For most people, mileage. However, even on a garage queen, it should be changed every year.

I've kept my miles really low and have changed my oil every 6 months. It's been 10 months since my last one and will probably just wait for the full year to do it again. I have been driving it more lately and will probably go back to doing it every 6 months. She's ran great and haven't noticed any problems.
Anybody think I'm wrong for doing so? |

It's in black in white for you in the owner's manual. Go by the OLM or once a year. Plain and simple.

1200 miles again this year on my SS Convertible.
8 quarts of Mobile one plus an oil filter with that few miles sure feels like overkill, but it's cheap insurance for the winter lay up. Oil came out incredibly clean. I should save it and use it in the lawnmower and snowblower. |
