MONSTER CLUTCHES?
Anyone running the level 3 setup (12" single disc) that can comment on how it performs?
I'm at a little over 600rwhp and want a clutch I can beat on without fear of having to tow it home. I also want zero noise, with no shudder/chatter when driving normally on the street. I contacted Monster, their response was MOST of the guys running them have no issues. They attribute the problems some have to instalation/break in error. I know the street slayer is the holy grail of clutches, but I don't go to the track more than a few times a year, and $2000 for a clutch doesn't seem worth it for my application. I would go that route if I was at the track every weekend. Most of the time the car isn't driven hard, but when I want to "play", I don't want thoughts of breaking down to keep me from enjoying the car (or putting a Mustang in its place!). I've put 1500 miles on the engine combo I have with a stock clutch and axles if that tells you anything...I really do not abuse the car at all. I just purchased DSS 1000 HP axles, and now need a clutch to complete the engine mods I did this summer. Then I can finally drive it without fear of breaking it if I play a little too much!

I ran a Monster Level 3 in my 02 Z06 and had nothing but problems, I changed it out to the Mcleod RXT and loved it so much that I just had the RXT installed in my 2010 SS..

Have the mcleod now, best clutch I've ever owned. LS9R, my buddy went through 2 of them when they first came out. Would slip a few hundred rpm and the peddle would get soft/stick ect. He changed to mcleod too.

I've got the level 3 in my 2010, with 650rwhp, and since new I've had nothing but squealing and chattering so bad that my dashboard feels like it's going to end up in my lap, and it's embarrassing to drive when there's people around.. I've talked to the guys at Monster and although they said to send it back, but I've not had the time to get it pulled apart, and mine was well over a year old, but they were still glad to help! I can say they've been very helpful and didn't give me any grief about sending it back. I do own a speed shop and do this kind of stuff every day, and he hasn't told me anything about improper install or break in? This was the first Monster I've done in a 5th gen Camaro, but the other LS swap cars we've built (mainly C3 vettes) have all had Monsters with no issues. I just can't get this one figured out for some reason, and have tried a number of things to fix it. Yes, beating on it does make it quiet and smooth, but that doesn't do me any good either.
Once the snow flies my car is coming apart for more upgrades anyway, and although Monster has been good to us for a number of cars, I might have to go with the Mantic for this one. |

Wow, how can there be this kind of extreme's with the same product? Almost sounds like it's hit or miss if a Monster Clutch will perform well in our cars. Lahway, is there anything special you guys do during the install that others may not be doing?

The question actually is- who here has tried many different clutches and not just go by what they run now?
I learned the hard way in the past. Probly 6 clutches in just as many years on my vette's. As of now, mcleod RXT has been the best clutch I've ever owned. Monster worked but the sounds/chatter and heavy clutch was a downfall for me.

Nothing special...just a proper install...
They're awesome units. Most people complain of "chatter" what in fact there is no chatter present. It's an aftermarket clutch, it's going to pack some BITE. Dual disks are nice, but expensive. I had a TEXTRALIA EXO SKEL TWIN on my 2002 Camaro making 500 rwhp and it sucked. What does that tell you? I would put a Monster up against any other brand anyday. We just removed a RAM TWIN that lasted 700 miles ina supercharged Trans Am. Installed a LEVEL 3 Monster and the guy loves us! |

I ran the Monster 3 single in my 10 SS, I was extrememly unhappy with the way the clutch performed. This was one of the reasons I ended up up selling the car, I couldn't see pulling it out and dropping another 2k+ into yet another clutch. Maybe as a track car clutch the Monster 3 is a good option but for the street mine was garbage.
Anyone considering purchasing this clutch should use the search function and look at comments from actual owners and users of this product, this is not the 1st time this has been brought up in this forum.

Monster clutches are great clutches. We sell a bunch of them.
There a few problems here and there mostly from the big volume of clutches they sell. Your bound to have a problem now and then when your shipping that many clutches out the door. What makes Monster a great company is if there is a problem, they are fast to get it corrected. They have outstanding customer service. Plus Monster clutches are just that, Monster clutches. They are not repackaged or a relabeled clutch like so many places do now. I know this because we used to manufacture the flywheels for Monster and know all the hard work that goes into a Monster clutch. Give us a call if you need a good clutch. Thanks Chris |
