The newly imposed federal requirements on coal plants forced or company to make some hard choices. We spent 10 billion (yes, with a B) up fitting the fleet to meet the new standards. While doing this, they took a strong look at the cost compared to the output, and the decision was made that 7 plants were not worth the investment, so just under 2,000 men were let go and the 7 plants were closed.
To help our bottom line after dropping 10 billion, 401K match has been eliminated, merit raises eliminated, and short term profit bonus eliminated. My end of year income in 2013 will be around $20k-$25k les than it would normally be. That is income that I'm used to having. We are also losing our benefits in 2014 and being pushed into the communist health care program, yippee! Sent from my Galaxy S3 using smack-a-talk |

While the updates are mandated, the rest seems like something that First Energy did. 10B really isn't that much money really, not for a company of its size. That price is enough for a new Nuke plant, but its not much when you realize they can fix multiple of their coal fire plants. I think First Energy is cutting connections where it needs to in order to save themselves money, I wouldn't blame Obama on this. I wouldn't blame either party. This is something that was going to happen regardless. Sorry to hear about the shafting...but I think 90% of the blame goes on First Energy, not the Obama Administration.

Agreed with above. Sounds like if they had to spend $10 billion, then somebody was in desperate need of some updates.
I'm sorry to hear about how it affects you, that certainly blows. But I would blame the company, not the government.

Same here, but for different reasons. I decided my money would be better spent buying guns, magazines, and ammunition before they are no longer available or reach unobtainable pricing levels.

No problem increasing EPA standards? Lol. What an idiotic thing to say. Who exactly is going to pay for the R&D on meeting those new standards? Certainly not the powers to be at the EPA or the activist behind them. Every company affected by the increased standards will have to either close the doors or figure out how to meet them. They will then have to pass that cost on to consumers. They will then get blamed for being greedy for charging more. Consumers will then have less money to spend on other things. I'm all for cleaner air and water but how about these activist fund the R&D and sell the technology instead of picking my pocket to fund their pet project? People also don't want radioactive water or nuclear waste. How about you build a plant that doesn't produce either of those? Make sure you don't pass any cost on to the consumer.

Last I checked, people don't go into business for warm fuzzy feelings. ROI is really all that matters at the end of the day.
With this in mind, people whine and complain about corporate greed, but have those same people taken a look at their pension/401k (403b if you're with a "non-profit") portfolio? Where is that money? It's not just sitting in some hole in the desert tucked safe away -- it's being funneled into stocks. When big business is sky-high on profits, this is also reflected with the raise in stock and increased dividends -- which pads our own personal investment portfolio. Why would one want to bite the hand that feeds them?

![]() I'll leave it at that. We should stop the politics talk in this thread. It's going to get ugly if people keep spouting off crap like this.

I've always wondered that as well.
Business either passes along the cost to consumers or they go out of business. Did someone say guns?

I think we're all mature enough to have such a discussion. As long as it does not lead to personal insults we should be fine. Constructive conversation can be a learning experience for all involved.
