I have a couple copies of these books all about COPO.
They are for sale in the classified section.
Check them out, I was given a few of these at a GM press event.

Yes and no, really

'69 COPOs were all supposedly intended for drag-racing. ZL-1s were COPOs

Nothing really all that magical about the '69 COPOs; it was just to get around the corporate engine ban

There really were two COPOs in '69, the L72 and the ZL-1 but you are correct, both were street cars

But by offering a ZL-1 and a COPO Camaro now, Chevy is sort of saying: which part of the COPO legacy do you want? We can do either: street car that's good on the track, or a track-only car

But I think we find it easy to forget: ZL-1s were COPOs

Also its easy to forget that those early cars were just as hard to come by as the current COPO cars.
They were just as expensive back than as they are today (when adjusted for inflation).

Just 69 ZL-1 Camaros were produced, the engine alone cost over US$4,000 — nearly twice that of a base coupe with a V8.
