There ought to be a law preventing lawyers from being politicians.

I like irony.

...and Scott...I pick it up tomorrow (and it's prettier than that red one in Minneapolis!) Thanks for your help.

Fbodfather, I generally agree with the frustration with CAFE. I'm against it too. However, the 35 mpg in CAFE is not the same 35 mpg on window stickers. That makes it not quite as bad. It still goes about it completely the wrong way, as Lutz said. And as a California native I would like to sincerely apologize for the stupidity that comes out of this state. Be thankful only a few of those stupid things like emissions laws have escaped out to the rest of the U.S. Enjoy your freedom and relatively low-tax lifestyles before we change that for you too. Again, sorry. One more thing - it really seems silly that the Aveo gets lower MPGs than the Cobalt. That thing is pretty sad. The Fit is pretty nice and the Fiesta looks desirable. The next Aveo is really going to have to be an insane leap forward.

I am curious what the hate with CAFE is? I know, it does limit some things but isn't it created to help out the consumer a bit as well as the environment.

I figure things like CAFE push auto makers forward and drive innovation that benefit the consumer.

I know, I know, it isn't the government's job to police what we buy but unfortunately cars are products that can harm the environment pretty profoundly and many people don't care about stuff like mileage until it effects them (e.g. when gas was expensive and you couldn't give anyone a SUV).

Now making the assumption that car emissions is responsible for the climate change that has gone on as long as the earth itself and ended the ice age, then there are better ways for the government to address its impact. Taxing gas to quantify and cover its environmental cost would be the correct way to do that. Lutz had the perfect analogy with the weight thing. So obesity is a problem in America. However, no one would suggest solving that problem by forcing apparel manufacturers to only make clothes too small for all but the smallest people to fit into. Instead they would propose solutions that changed what people valued in nutrition and encouraged healthier lifestyles. Why do things any differently for transportation then? Forcing manufacturers to make cars more efficient while giving consumers absolutely no reason to desire more efficiency makes no sense at all. Innovation can never be successfully pushed by the government. If innovation is driven by market demand, it will be successful. Otherwise it will simply be a waste of money. If consumers demand more efficient cars, then good to the manufacturers that meet that need and too bad to the ones that don't.

And I'd still like to know how car emissions ended the ice age if cars weren't even around at the time.

Whilst I am dissapointed there is no Z28 forthcoming, my dissapointment would be offset by the announcement of a GMPP supercharger kit for the LS3 so I can get my boost on and keep my factory warranty.

(Yeah I know, I could do an engine swap, but that's a bit more money/labour intensive)

I do hold off, and I guess I'm not the only one.(ok, I'm european so that's a different deal)

I mean, it's not that big of a problem for "us" wanting 500+hp, I guess it 's more of a problem for GM, people waiting aren't buyers, people waiting may be tired of waiting and may go on a Mustang GT500. These are dollars going away from GM.
Correct me if I'm wrong (which is highly possible): CAFE is'nt implemented yet, so make the Z as fast as possible before the standard (that may move when the administration will/may realize these are not realistic standards)

(Ps: what about building and selling the car outside of the US?)

Overall, I understand what you're telling us, but I'm not sure GM wil go better being shy.

Personally I think Onstar is really missing the boat by lagging behind on adding more robust nav features like custom routes and no the mapquest feature isn't even a baby step unless they've changed it to actually use the mapquest routes.
Has anyone heard of an atlas? They cost about $5.00 and can be installed in any car........
