Replace the rears with different tires?
So 14 months and 17,500 miles into my P-Zeros, the rears are pretty worn down. They slip on just about anything. Especially when frozen. The fronts are in great shape.
Any mechanical or handling drawbacks to keeping the front P-Zeros and putting Continental ExtremeContact DWS's on the rear? Disclaimer: I know more about tires than most people, but probably less than 90% of you. So if it's a stupid idea, don't go apesh*t on me. Just tell me why. Thanks!

I don't see a problem with that, it shouldn't have a negative effect on anything as long as you are sticking with the OEM sizes (or at least close to it). I have the DWS's on all four corners on my car, and I really like them. Of course, I don't drive my car in bad weather if I don't have to. It spends the winters "hibernating" in my garage.

Last winter, we barely had any snow here and I was able to get around every day. We had our first snow this week (3 inches) and I chose to drive my wife's 4WD Subaru. I would go with the four DWS's all around, but I would hate to throw away two perfectly good P-Zeros. Thanks.

As long as you have the same tires on the same axle you are good.

I'd like to see what Rudy would say about running 2 original tires in front and two all-seasons in back.

May I suggest these. I live in St. Louis and these are much better in winter. Not bad in summer either. I have them on all 4 corners.

the Pirelli's don't like the cold and they definitely won't like the snow. sounds like the rears will have much more grip than the front in the winter. can you say understeer? best to go with four of the same tires if you can. it's not just the size that's important. you have to consider the effect that tires of two completely different traction characteristics will have on your handling.
just my 2 cents drive safe and be happy |

As mentioned. P-Zeros suck in colder temps. Up in Penn, he might want a different tire for the long cold season.
To O.P. different tires (front/back) is fine as long as you keep similar tire diameter. But I will add, P-Zeros are excellent warm weather summer tires and they can be purchased for a decent price at tirerack. |
