DETROIT (Reuters) - For the first time in nearly two decades, GM's Chevrolet brand will be back in the business of selling rear-wheel-drive sedans in the United States.

General Motors expects the production version of the Chevrolet SS rear-wheel-drive sedan to act as a low-volume car and build excitement around the brand, the head of the company's North American operations said on Thursday.

When the SS makes it debut, it will be the first time in 17 years Chevy will sell a rear-wheel-drive sedan in the United States, excluding the police car it currently offers.

GM stopped selling the rear-wheel drive Pontiac G8 sedan in 2009. Cadillac markets two rear-wheel drive sedans -- the CTS and the new ATS.

GM unveiled the NASCAR racing version of the Chevy SS in Las Vegas on Thursday and plans to show the production model during the Daytona 500 race in Florida in February. The Australian-built car will go on sale in the third or fourth quarter of 2013 as a 2014 model.

"This is going to be a pull on demand from our dealers and customers," Mark Reuss, head of GM's North American operations, said in a telephone interview.

"This is quite different than a big, high-volume production program with target volumes," he added. "It doesn't have to do anything. We're using it to race. You have to think of it almost like a marketing halo program for Chevrolet."

Reuss said he expects GM, which sells the rear-wheel-drive Camaro and Corvette coupes, to sell fewer than 10,000 SS performance sedans annually. The SS will be built on the same vehicle platform as the Camaro and Holden VE Commodore.

Rear-wheel-drive cars offer better performance attributes than front-wheel-drive models, including acceleration, braking and handling.

The starting price for the SS will be determined closer to vehicle launch, but Reuss said it will be higher than the front-wheel-drive Chevy Impala's base price of $27,535. Reuss said he does not see the SS detracting from sales of other Chevy vehicles because it is so different.

The NASCAR version of the SS closely resembles the production model, something the sport had moved away from in recent years as it pushed to make race cars safer, resulting in more homogenous cars.

NASCAR has worked with the automakers in recent years to reintroduce the individual traits of each brand's cars, an effort that will be seen next season. Reuss said the SS race car puts "the 'stock' back in stock car."

The SS replaces the Chevy Impala as GM's race car in NASCAR.

Chevy has long used the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models. It first appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car, and the fist production vehicle with an SS option package was the 1961 Impala. The SS designation returned to the Chevy lineup in 2010 with the debut of the fifth-generation Camaro.

10,000 annually seems pretty low to me.

The G8 GXP was 40K and the exchange rate has gone the wrong way in the last four years. This is Holden HSV Pricing to get an idea of why there will is a 10,000 unit target.

ClubSport R8 $67,600 (manual) $69,600 (automatic)
ClubSport R8 Tourer $68,600 (m) $70,600 (a)
Grange $88,900 (auto only)
GTS $82,900 (m) $84,900 (a)
Maloo R8 $64,600 (m) $66,600 (a)
20 years of Maloo R8 $67,600 (m) $69,600 (a)
Senator Signature $83,990 (both manual and auto)

Look for a decked SS to be comparable in price to a ZL1. If I am GM the only SSs coming to the USA will be decked or I'll lose money.

For that price, no wonder they are expecting such low sales.

Might as well not bring it then. A CTS-V is roughly what a ZL1 costs (as is a C63), an ATS-V would probably be low $50K too. The G8 GXP was a great, great car at $40K but there aren't 2000 of them total in the whole US. A car that's 50% more expensive than that isn't going to sell five times as well. The math makes no sense to me.

They aren't planning on selling a whole lot of them. Inventories are going to be low, but Holden will build as many as dealers order. Reuss said that in an interview with MotorTrend.

IMHO, it has to be no more than 45k and at least 450HP to be viable. You can get a Charger SRT8 Superbee for around 43k. That said, I don't believe you can get anywhere near an acurate price by comparing what the aus price would be in US dollars.

I think that's right. ~400HP is fine. If the MSRP comes in over $45K, I'd be calling Scotty the same day to cancel my preorder. The ZL1, Z06 and ZR1 are halo cars. GM doesn't need any more haloes. But it could use a powerful RWD sedan that normal people can afford.

MSRP for a Pontiac GXP four model years ago was $41,000 with a manual tranny. 1 USD bought 1.30 AUD. Today 1 USD buys .95 USD. The exchange rate has gone 35 cents the wrong way. Adjusting for the exchange rate brings the price to over 50K.

This is the one time I hate to agree with you! Over the last several years I imported a lot of parts from Australia to upgrade and convert my G8. Every month the stuff got more and more expensive simply because of the changing exchange rate.
Keep in mind that GM had to HEAVILY incentivize the G8 to sell them. I know people who bought brand new GT's for very low 20's!
