They're not really well suited for hitting aircraft. One of the good things about using explosive warheads is that you don't need to get a 'skin on skin' kill, where missile makes direct contact with the target. As long as you get close enough, the shrapnel will tear up the control surfaces or other important bits. With a rail-gun you have no choice but to hit the target directly, which is really frikin' hard. Its kinda like going bird hunting with a sniper rifle (factiod: the term sniping derives from shooting birds with a rifle, in flight).

The killer app for railguns, in my opinion, would be as a bunker-buster. I don't know how many feet of earth or concrete a projectile could penetrate at mach 7, but I'm sure its more than enough to ruin somebodys day.

Oh, I definitely agree that hitting something like an aircraft would be next to impossible.

My first thought with this because it was a Navy project is that this would go on a battleship for bombardment of bunkers, etc. Then I realized...I don't think they'd have the power to use this. You'd probably need a nuclear powered vessel of some sort as a platform.

I think what we need to see next is a portable enough way to power this so you can mount it on an AC-130 Gunship.

That would be awesome! Not that a AC130 gunship isn't awesome the way it already is.

I don't suppose they got Tony Stark to build an arc reactor for it.

They have mini versions of these that can fire 125,000 rounds a minute. Multi barreled. Tiny sabots.

Nuclear power isn't a problem for the US Navy, they've built something on the order of 200 nuclear powered ships, including some cruisers.

But a nuclear reactor wouldn't be needed. A round fired from a railgun would have something on the order of lets say50 megajoules. Ticonderoga class cruisers in the USN produce some 60 MW of power. Thats more than enough to fire off 1 shot per second. Higher powered shots would simply take longer to charge. However, those cruisers don't have the generators on board to convert all that engine power into electrical power. But the upcomming Zumwalt class destroyers will. Nearly 80 MW of all electric power coming from their gas turbines. Oh, and the Zumwalt class is being primarily intended for shore-bombardment purposes.
