2012 2LT - Horrible gas mileage

So to avoid the 'this has already been discussed' replies:

I understand that how you drive the vehicle will affect mileage. I understand city vs highway will (obviously) affect mileage. I know that maintaining the vehicle (oil) along with other things needs to be done to ensure optimal performance.

Mon-Fri I'm city driving - max speed being 30, 35, sometimes 40 depending. Weekends I hit the highway.

When I first got the vehicle, my 'average' mileage was 15-16mpg. Keep in mind, this is the V6 so I should be closer to 17-18. Either way, I figured they're 'always estimates' and kinda dealt with it.

Fast forward - 6100 miles on the car and here is my 'average' gas mileage:

11.4. REALLY?

If there is no rational explanation for this, it's going in the shop. It has slowly decreased from 15-16 to 14, 13, 12, now 11. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if I hit 10 or 9.

Coincidentally whenever I turn on the heat, I'm hearing a low, high-pitched 'flutter' noise, audible to anyone in the vehicle. Only occurs when the heat is on, and you hear it 'flutter' out when you turn the heat off. Also, when traveling at slow speeds (5mph and under) there is an audible noise coming from car, some people described it as a grinding noise but it seems to only occur when the heat is on, or is more audible when the heat is on. Some people also said that when braking, there is a 'known issue' with camaros where there is grinding/noise. Not sure if that would be related, but I'm almost positive the car has to go in.

Auto. I know that's not optimal for best performance, but regardless with an estimated 18 city 29 highway...average 22...averaging half of the estimated doesn't seem right to me..

I'm at 19.4 with the same type of Mon-Fri driving as you...and I have an SS. You're getting worse mileage than my Trailblazer SS and my Tahoe.

That mileage is terrible. Sorry, no real ideas, but I'd be taking that in as well.

With that mpg, I'd say there is some sort of issue. When I had my 6, my mpg was around 22 and that was driving 50/50 hwy/city and a pretty heavy foot.

Your MPG is really really low for the v6. I average 22-23 MPG and I do not drive lightly. 60% city / 40% highway.

Take it to the dealer and start bugging for answers.

Are you getting gas from the exact same station every time you fill it up?

Have you reset the mileage? Try to hold down the button on the top of the blinker stick until your mileage counter resets. Drive it around the highway after that and see what the DIC has to say about the miles per gallon.

How often do you stop and go?

These cars are heavy and the LLT/LFX are making a lot of power for a 3.6L V6 engine. That is why bolt ons only do so much for us. In rough general terms, you could say the engine is "closed to maxed out" from the factory.

Stop and go is what will hurt you the most. It takes a lot of energy to get moving.

Add to that, the V6 just flat out doesn't get good mileage. If I drive it soft and shift at 2k RPMs the highest combined MPG I've gotten with mostly city and local road driving is 22 MPG. On average I get 16-18 tbh.

The car is running fine because just this summer I got 33 after 4 hours of highway driving.

If the V6 isnt on the highway, its going to get just about the same mileage as the 8.

Also keep in mind that you need to reset the calculator every time you fill up.

one thing I might ask is do you reset your avg mpg at every fillup? If that is the avg over the "life" then I would expect it to be low (not that low). I have a '12 1LT and mine got horrible mpg at first. I drive heavy traffic avg speed 30mph stop and go constantly. Then it started getting better.

I would suggest resetting the avg mpg and watch it as you drive. I like to do this because costing down the mountains around my house I can get it to read like 40mpg... But if you are conserned, take it in to the dealer. Make them earn the money you paid for the car. until warranty is out, they are your slave...
