Dealer and CAI
I got a check engine light yesterday, car ran great no problems, only had
the check engine light come on. I took it to the dealer and after waiting over an hour they got it in to check it out, after several minutes the advisor gets me and tells me because I have a CAI they would have to charge me to futher look into the check engine light as warranty would not cover do to having the CAI. I told him not to do anything that I would take the car back, put the stock air intake back on and then have the car checked. He went back to have the tech bring my car around, within minutes the advisor comes back telling me that there was a disconnected vacum hose and the the check engine light is gone. I think this dealer was trying to pull a fast one and have me pay for something that should be covered under warranty, I can't beleive that they found the problem in such a short time, after I told them that I didn't want them to do anything further with the car till I reinstalled the stock air cleaner.

Just consider it lesson learned. By putting the CAI on the car you have broken the terms of the warranty contract. Technically they were within their rights to refuse to work on your car. Granted most dealers would not worry about the intake. Take the time to read your warranty contract in your manual. We have LIMITED warranty on our cars, and modifications void that warranty.
There will be people chime in about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act , but the dealer and manufacture has rights to uphold the terms of the warranty.

I guess the dealer has the right to refuse warranty if they choose, but I really thought that I would not have a problem with this dealer as I consider myself a good customer, I brought a couple cars from them and have had service work done.
lessen learned, they have the right to refuse warranty and I have the right to choose a different dealer, which I will do.

Yep, lesson learned. A dealer can refuse to work on a vehicle if they want to because of the smallest mods (i.e. CAI). Remember, those "SS" embroidered floor mats caused your power windows to stop working.

Your dealer was just a bit more of a weiner than usual. I agree with you that he was probably just trying to get you to pay for labor on a problem they already found

years ago i had a car that had a intake on it, something was wrong with the fuel system, they couldent figure out what it was so they said it was the intake that was causing all the issues, so 300 bones later my gas tank was clogged they replaced it under warranty i asked about the intake they giggled and said well that dealership got 300 dollars. weeks later i traded the car for a truck. its a money game they will say anything to get that money!

^ That's horrible. I work at a dealer and would be livid if I heard about that going on. Ridiculous. Sorry you had to deal with that.

It all depends on the dealer. As other have said, some are mod freindly and others aren't. For example, I bought my CAI thru my dealer and they installed it for me along qith a few other minor mods.
now in theory, the dealer 'could' consider your warranty voided because of your mod. USUALLY, as long as the problem they find is NOT related to your mod, then the work will still be covered under warranty. It sounds to me like your service advisor was in the process of warning you that because of your mod, you would have to pay for them to work on it while at the same time, the tech was probably already looking things over in anticipation of getting the go-ahead. While the service advisor was taliking to you, the tech noticed the loose vacumn line and connected it, and as it turned out fixed the problem already. as long as the loose vacumn line was not related to the installation of the CAI, there shouldn't be any charge. |
