I'm the opposite. I pay for a gym membership because there is nothing at the gym to distract me and keep me from working out... except for this one girl when she does squats...

Hahah I figured you were going to say that. I completely agree. The class after mine has some extreme personalities that I just CAN NOT stand. I will never go to their class. I go to the 5am class and everyone in there (including the super ripped people) and very nice, supportive and humble. I think all sports and figure activities can breed extreme personalities though.

I like it cause its always different, it pushes me everyday, and its fun! I just remember every day where I started, have fun, support those in my class, and always stay humble.

It's getting to the gym that would be my problem
I am fortunate in that I have a well equipped gym at my house, I workout mid day when there is no one around and can time my nutrition around workouts, My gym is right off of my kitchen and family room so it is in my face all the time. This is my set up.

My garage gym. I have to move it, actually the boys are going to move it, because I have to make room for the 1969 Camaro I just bought. It is all going downstairs to my former man room that was conquered and became an androgenous room. I will reclaim it!!

I have DBs to 120, the rack is a Crepinsek rack (1500lb.com), there is a safety squat bar, a Westside reverse hyper and a bunch of other stuff including an EFS prowler (the most horrible aberration of a piece of equipment ever-if you have never used one, it is a fresh HELL you will never get used too!). I built the platform using plywood and rubber mats.

Many of my workouts have been interrupted because my camaro is there too. I can't tell you how many times I went to workout and started doing something to it and didn't get to finish the workout.

I'm jealous of this gym as well. I don't have the space, or money to invest in that kind of equipment.

When I started working out I had to overcome injuries from a bad bike crash so I started out with a bowflex. As I progressed I sold it and started buying used equipment on Craigs list, most people were almost giving it away. I started weeding out what I wanted and sold the rest, I ended up with what I have and made money doing it, this set up actually made me money.

That is a nice setup. I think the most important piece as with my set up is the power rack. It alows you versatility and the ability to lift heavy without a spotter.

Thanks guys.

All anyone ever needed to get big and strong was a bench, a rack or squat stands, and a barbell with plates. Those and the basic lifts have done for anyone than anything else. I suppose you have to add in determination as well.

I started buying stuff in 1997 when my son was born because my gym didn't have a daycare or anything like that. I bought most of the dumbbells, plates, one of my barbells, and the chest supported row off Craigslist over years. I bought the punching bag and stand for $20 from a friend.

I researched power racks for weeks, if not months, before I bought that one to replace the one I had before. EFS wasn't selling the selection of racks they do know or I would have went with one of theirs. It has 1/2" adjustments and is made of 11 gauge steel. The feet are made of 7 gauge steel because I dropped a barbell on one of them and it bent so when I replaced them, I got the thicker stuff. I have added dip bar attachments and the L hooks for racking a bar on the front. The lower crossbar in back is something I had made. I call it the poor man's monolift. The maker of my rack actually does offer a monolift attachment but I don't need it.

It is a good feeling knowing I am the strongest guy in my gym. When you are the only fish in the pond, it isn't hard being #1.

It hasn't changed . Many people concentrate on isolating the muscles they like to look at in the mirror lol. Basic lifts that incorporate compound muscle groups are the the most effective for strength as well as hypertrophy. These lifts should always be done first then you can add in isolation lifts to fatigue specific muscle groups or help with muscles that are not quite developed the way you want. There are too many guru's with all kinds of gimmicks but the fact is the basics are still the most productive. If you stick with this theory and do not gain size and strength then something else is off, most likely proper nutrition.

Lift heavy weights in the compound exercises, eat a lot of quality (90% of the time)and often times no so great quality (10% of the time), and get plenty of rest. Bottom line is if you aren't getting bigger and stronger OVER a long PERIOD OF TIME, you aren't eating enough.

Following that equation, you will be bigger, stronger, leaner, and in better overall shape than 99% of the population.

I often find myself wondering where it all went wrong. It really is a simple equation that if played out over a period of time consisting of months, and more importantly years, will fulfill most anyone's expectations of strength and musculature. It is a marathon, not a sprint. The biggest, strongest guys are typically in their 30s or 40s if not 50s and have years of training under their belt.

I am guilty of the nutrition part. I do not eat enough. I have no one to blame except myself because I have a wife who loves to cook for me.

This reminded me of something my son said when he was 4 or 5 years old. I wondered aloud why people want to run so much and be skinny. He said "skinny people are weak." I have nothing against running but I do not see the point of doing it to the extremes such as running marathons or other extreme (to me) distances. There is nothing wrong with a 1-2 mile run or sprints. I didn't learn to fight just to run away. To quote Mark Rippetoe (whether you like him or not), "stronger people are harder to kill and generally more useful."

This is all so true. Nutrition is the most difficult to get right, to much or the wrong foods you get fat, not enough you get skinny or weak, it's not hit or miss but does take some experimenting to get it right but you've got to eat to grow.
