Why they buzzed in someone dressed in all black after classes had started us still a mystery to me. As of what we know now his mother wasn't even at the school. So many questions still unanswered. |

I have not spoken with Ted today. I'm sure I will at some point tomorrow. His youngest is a high school student and he lives about 25 minutes away from Newtown. |

But they need them to walk into a metal detector before they buzz them in. Just because you know someone don't mean anything anymore. |

Folks that are jumping in and blaming just about everything today on gun control or lack of gun control or apathy or video games are missing the point. The main point is that regardless of legality of guns, when a person has a will to do harm ... they will do harm. There is not a lot that we can do to prevent 100% of all violent crime without 100% restrictions on the population as a whole that would be unliveable. This is not to say that we should not review the events of what happened with this horrific tragedy to see what we can learn from it and determine if there are other ways for us to increase our vigilance against future tragedies. We should. Answers (if they even exist) to these types of problems, are not arrived at by reacting swiftly and emotionally based on such a horrific act. We need to take time to think through appropriate responses ... and we may find that there are no responses available. Historically, this is far from the first tragedy ... and yes ... more than 20 years ago... A quick internet search will bring up other events through history that show that, I reitterate, "folks that have a will to do harm, will do harm": Bath School disaster - May 18, 1927 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster University of Texas massacre - Aug 1, 1966 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman These are in addition to the much more recent events, including Columbine (which was not all that recent - 13 years ago), Va Tech, Sandy Hook, and others. Gun control is not the answer ... nor is arming everyone. I do not have the answer, though I wish I did. We can not safety-proof everything and everyone without taking the "life" out of living. We cannot prevent every incident from occuring. We cannot be certain that arming everyone wouldn't actually create additional incidents. What we can do is pray for the victims and the families of all involved and do what we can to support and care for one another and be vigilant and aware of our surroundings. - Andy (and for those that have problems deciphering my user id - a Virginia Tech alum) Last edited by GnyaTek; 12-14-2012 at 11:39 PM. The problem will be figuring out how exactly to regulate that. Who do you contact to make sure this person doesn't have a personal history of violence/mental illness that has managed to fly under the radar? What about the sportsman that wants to buy a revolver to load snake shot and keep on his side while hunting to deal with snakes is denied due to two of his ex-wives claiming he is mentally unstable? That's hardly fair..but at the same time, Mr. Joe Blow who plans on shooting up a school in two days (and has probably planned this out - MEANING with the LAWS prohibiting him if he did certain things he wouldn't be able to get his gun easily and go out with a bang) has absolutely no record, no signs of this goes through the new legal channels and is accepted? It's still flawed, no matter what way you go. I am all for guns, (own many myself) but I feel like no matter how strict our laws are, it is simply mainly unfair to honest people who want them for their own protection (who actually go through the legal channels to own/carry one) because at the end of the day, by making the regulations tougher it restricts those people, while as I pointed out, the people who want a gun, are going to get a gun anyway they want. I know here in MO before you purchase a pistol, you have to fill out this long form, then the form gets called into the feds to be crosschecked if you are on a list of "do not sell to"/is this person who they say they are, and some of those aspects that can keep you from purchasing is mental health issues. Also, to LEGALLY purchase a pistol in the USA, the whole USA, federal law is 21 years of age. So, technically, this kid obtained his weapon(s) through illegal means anyway and obviously went through with absolutely no regard to ethics, morals, law or plain decent human nature. And I'm being real nice when I put it that way. There is no easy answer. And it sucks, it really does. I lose a little faith in humanity every day.

What a sad comentary on our society that a person like this was walking around in the world to be able to do such a horrific thing. The crazy, evil criminal elements in our society have all the rights. The innocent children are treated like property. We have to back up and understand the importance of mental health treatment for those that are treatable and go back to locking up the ones that will always pose a risk of harm to others. The good of the many over the rights of the one.
No words can give any comfort to these families. But we offer all we have, prayers, positive thoughts, emotional and financial support and counseling should be poured out to them though we know it is so little to offer for such a horrible loss.
