Guys, I wanted to get your opinions/thoughts on something I'm trying... So a little background first...
I've modified my 2011 SS LS3 quite a bit. Camsahft, valve springs, pushrods, timing chain, rocker trunions, billet flywheel and twin carbon ceramic clutch discs, 1 7/8" primary LT stainless headers, no cats, 3" mandrel bent exhaust into Flowmasters, ADM twin fuel pumps and FPCM, G-Force 9" rear and axles, 4.11 gears with Trac-Loc differential, Hotchkis chassis brace, Full treatment of every BMR rear suspension arms complete with rear suspension cradle bushings, and of course, a custom tune via HP Tuners. I've done everything myself (except for the tune which was done by the best LS tuner out here in CO) in my own home garage. I recently bought HP Tuners (the pro version) for myself, and downloaded my tune from the Vehicle Control Module. I noticed when I opened up the VCM Editor, under "Spark" there are the two spark curve maps - one pair labeled "Low Octane" and the other pair labeled "High Octane". Now, I KNOW my car will NEVER have low octane gas put in her. I don't take my car to a dealership EVER (obviously). No one but me will EVER drive her. Not no how, not no way. I had noticed that sometimes, my exhaust pipes would rattle a bit under very specific circumstances. It would sometimes tap the crossmember just a bit - which the knock sensors translate that metallic sound into engine knock - and them immediately go to the "Low Octane Map". I even tried dropping the cross member a bit using spacers, but with the new Hotckis Chassis Brace, the bigger 3" pipes still hit the tabs (not the cross member) every now and then. So with that all being said, I simply copied the High Octane tables and values, and pasted them into their corresponding Low Octane tables, so both maps now are identical, and are set for "High Octane". What are your thoughts on this? Am I flirting with disaster, or do you think that I should be ok as long as not a single drop of low octane fuel finds its way into my tank? The difference between the low octane map and the high octane map is astounding - which is why there's such a marked difference in performance that everyone can instantly feel. At some spot, it pulls out as much as 20 degrees of timing (between the modified performance tune I had and the stock low-octane map). Opinions/thoughts? HAPPY NEW YEAR! BLESSINGS! Sam

On a follow-up note, I took the car out for the first time since doing it last night, and WOW! What a difference! I have been running on the low octane map for a while, and it was such a blast to drive on the big boy map!

Only other thing as far as what you have done being bad, is that I sort of believe (being stock, basically) is that even with the simple fuse pull, the timing is set too high...and may cause a "knock" from that...but it is short lived as it will "learn down" as needed.... |

Camaro Corvette GTO CTS G8 Firebird Truck performance tuner in Tampa Orlando
I recently tuned a bone stock L99 2011 camaro with 20xxx miles on it. The owner from the start of owning the car only ran the car on 87 oct. Though this doesnt make sense to us performance minded guys, he wanted to save money on gas.
Although after tuning the L99, we had about a 7 RWHP gain on a completely bone stock camaro, the vehicle never defaulted to the low octane table. it had a good amount of knock before we started tuning, and we were able to minimize most of it, but it doesnt stay consistant with 87 octane. Similar example. My wife drives a 2006 Chevy uplander 3900 V6. God only knows what brand fuel she fills the car with, but I can assure you it never gets filled with an octane grade above 87. Its was throwing a evap canister code, so rather than replace the evap canister, I figured Id tune the family van, and just turn off the code. I wanted to tune the van for better fuel mileage, which has differant stratigies then tuning for performance. I was able to pick up 3 more MPG city driving on the van with the new tune, cant do a heck of alot with 87 octane performance wise, but again, the family van did not default to the low octane table and originally it would pull 9 degrees of spark just driving around and at WOT. now my wife's family van can beat the other soccer moms vans to our kids games lol. |

From my experience and the tuners I have spoke to, they claim 5-10 rwhp with just a tune... |

Correct. We did a tranny tune and corrected spark from the high octane and fueling. We left the low octane stock in case it did default to the low, but it was reading timing from the high octane table.

OK so tonight I pulled my 5&20 fuses. I live in Ontario and we have access to 94 octane here. I have only had the car for a few weeks (New to me Dec 21) and I have put nothing in the car but 94. I have gone through at least 2 full tanks of gas .. due to the weather other wise I might have gone through more!
The car had about a half tank of gas when I bought it. I asked the dealer about the fuel and they said it had premium which in ontario typical means 91. My Dad has an 06 SSR 6.2L and only runs 94 octane since he had it tuned. We had a few talks about fuel since I take his car to some auto shows during the summers. Anyways, I already planed to take my Camaro to get a professional performance tuning in the spring. I knew I would be using 94, so I ran the car pretty deep into empty before my next first fill. It was really fun burning down that first new camaro owner 1/2 tank of gas!! Tomorrow I will put the fuses back and take it out for a run. Since I am still new to the car in general, I am not likely to notice a huge difference to some long time owners. I am not much of a mechanic, more of a driver! So if anything, it will be mentally faster for me now!! I will let you know how it goes ... of course depending on the weather here in ontario. |
