Got lucky!

Well today is my last day of free OnStar which expires today since i bought the car new in July. I've never used OnStar for anything and i was thinking of just letting it expire since i never use it. I'm always careful about keeping the keys in my pocket and the only way i lock my car doors is with the remote while i'm out of the car.

So i'm at the car wash and wiping down my interior and i must of pressed the lock button but couldn't tell because the radio was on. Yep you guessed it when i closed the door i didn't know the car was locked and locked my self out (keys in the ignition, DOH!).

I used the phone at the car wash to call OnStar and they unlocked it for me. So i'm thinking i might sign up and extend the service in case i get locked out again. I just installed the OnStar Remote link on my smart phone and it does work at unlocking and locking the doors (i just checked)

So my question is to those who know: Will that app work if you don't keep a subscription to OnStar?

Thanks for any answers

considering it uses your login info from the onstar site I would hazard a guess and say no.

Ok nevermind. I called OnStar and it won't work if your subscription ends.

Just haggle them down on the price, its pretty easy to get a good deal for a subscription.

If you tell them you can't afford to keep it, they will lower the price. Someone told that to my mom and my whole family has been using that trick ever since.

I called but the girl on the phone just read off what was on the web site. I ended up getting the safe and sound plan for $12.95/month. I don't need the directions and connections plan since i use my Garmin GPS and navigation on my phone. I also ended up getting 60 mins. of hands free phone service for $4.99 that is good for one year in case my phone dies or i forget it.

I'll keep OnStar for a while or maybe next month haggle for a cheaper price as if i'm canceling my subscription. I have AAA and can get lock out service but i just don't like the idea of someone prying with a tool and a possibility of damaging my door. :(

I just got my reminder that mine is going to expire. The letter I got says 18.95 per month for the safe and sound. The year price is 199, which breaks down to 16.58 per month. On star had actually called me a while ago and of course tried to sell me minutes like you just got. The question I asked him was about expiration and he told me that as long as I keep On star the minutes don't expire.

If you go to www.onstar.com and log in or if your not registered then go ahead and register. Then click on your account info and then renew your plan it's cheaper than the $18.95 price. I just checked and my mins. are for one year and they do expire. Maybe yours is different.

My save money recommendation:

Use a tie wire and tire a key or door opener under the car in a lease likely place someone would look.

Good idea. Probably have to be in a water proof bag or something so the remote doesn't get wet and ruin the key fob i would think. Also OnStar is a good thing if your car is ever stolen then they can locate it from the GPS and disable it, call the cops and hopefully get the person who stole it.

Thanks for the heads up. Depending onyour insurance you may get a discount if you keep On star. State Farm is giving me a mileage discount that should actually more than pay for the safe and sound plan. Just something you might want to check into.
