Shhhhh, We're out of premium
Stopped to get gas at my local Valero this morning. Went in since I had to get a couple other things and prepaid for the gas. While pumping (premium of course) I notice a post-it on the pump near the card swiper that they are out of premium. What the hell is pumping through the premium nozzle then? By the time I noticed the tank was nearly full. I went in and told them they should have bags on the premium nozzles and need much bigger signs. They asked if I wanted the $1.30 difference in price refunded. I told them that wasn't the point but stopped short of explaining why since I figured they really didn't care anyway.
Guess I get to try the fuse pull after this tank but really it's quite a shame that a $40k car is permanently degraded performance-wise by running 87 octane just once without knowing the little fuse pull trick. Come on GM. How hard can it be to automatically set the timing tables back to normal after a certain period of time or certain number of miles? And how the hell is it legal to pump 87 through a 91 pump? </rant> |

And I am pertty certain that if a tank is empty it will not begin to pump a different grade. You probably got some remaining premium. |

I doubt 87 would come through a 91 pump. You most likely got 91 like the other guy said. Wouldn't you be able to throw in a bottle of octane booster? I've found that 104+ octane booster keeps my 5.3 running smooth with 93 being the base fuel.
Also I find it amazing when people say all gas grades are the same. That you're just wasting money running 93 when 87 is just as good. To them I just smile and bite my tongue.

From what I understand, for some engines, there is absolutely no difference in performance and longevity of life between running 87 and 93 Octane.

My dad was an engine builder, not professional but he built his own for old trucks. He never used anything under 89.

Guys......You didn't read his post totally, or realize what he was saying.....IF he hadn't known about the Fuse Pull, which he does now because of being part of C5, THEN he would have thought his car was degraded, and he might have taken it to a dealer and they would have reset it for him and most likely charged him as well, and wouldn't have told him about the Fuse Pull solution.

I would be upset if I purchased a product of a certain type, and instead received a product of a lower grade as well.
They should of put the notice on the button for the high octane, if it was buttons, or bags over the high octane nozzles as the OP stated if they had different nozzles for each octane. |

To the OP. Valero is a watered down gas anyway. I wouldn't go anywhere but Sunoco for fuel. In my area I have found its the only 93 that my supra won't knock on under high boost. It's the fuel I tell everyone to run. It's proven to be the best in my area. Possibly different in your area. Valero fuel is just as horrible as delta sonic gas. It's so watered down your mileage drops 3-4 mpg over the course of a tank with delta sonic fuel. |

From working a long time ago aat a station I can tell you that it is illegal, at least in PA, to sell anything below what the pump says. My old boss would put higher grade gas in the lower grade tanks, which benefits the consumer. But couldn't do it the other way. It's usually from the them not being able to fit their load in lets say the 91 tank but had room for the extra romm in the 89 or 87 tanks. The truck would dump the remaining of what was ordered in the other tanks. I would venture to say that you probably did get 91. Maybe they were almost out so they put signs up early.

The fuel tables DO reset. They will always reset.
