Will they patch it?

Hey guys, been a while since I had a tire patched (like, since I had my last truck). I noticed my DIC said I had low air after work. Took a look, sure enough, caught a nail

Is that far enough way from the sidewall for a patch? It's about dead center in the outer row of tread.

I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow after I get off to have it taken care of.

I will say that they will not. I got one in that exact place and pep boys would not plug it. I am not a mechanic but if I could have I would have plugged it and then just monitored it.

I would do a patch & plugged it might be a few $$ more but well worth it IMO.

Interesting, I have never seen a tire shop just do a plug alone? All mine have always been buffed and patched on the inside.

Being a daily driver, I'm going to go the most reliable route.

Hard to say on that one... Keep trying places until you get someone to fix it? About a month ago I ran over what Schwabb said was probably a razor blade. The day I needed it fixed Schwabb was closed so I took it to Walmart, they said they would not/could not plug it as it was a "cut" and it would continue to split.

Schwabb uses some kind of plug/patch combo things, they fixed it no problem. It's still holding together.

That's not too close to the shoulder and patch-able. Go to a tire specialty shop and they should be able to do it for you.

that should be DOABLE.....and after reading TONS of stuff on the subject.....the absolute best fix it to do BOTH, first plug it....then patch on the inside.

NOPE. Too close to the edge. They can't guarantee it so they won't do it. Sorry.

Well anywho, I made some more time and went to a local tire shop instead. They told me as long as they could buff it properly and the patch didn't ride onto the sidewall than they would do it. At any rate, it's fixed and they re-balanced the wheel/tire for a grand total of $22.

I have considered ordering a brand new tire though since I don't have many miles and just keeping this patched tire on a LS steel wheel as a backup? Think that's worth while?

Just in case the tire could not be fixed I called two dealers looking for a tire. One is close to work (Downing), but the other was the one I bought the car from (Harris). First, I was surprised that neither had any tires for a Camaro on hand. Not one. Is this normal? Downing wanted $170 for the tire, Harris wanted $150. Even better, the parts guy at Harris called me back on his own to see if I was able to fix the tire or if he needed to order one for me because he could have it in the morning. That's good service, and why my family has been working with that dealer for several years now!
