I am new to drag racing so this might be a " new guy "question but if the cams are getting are cars to pull hard after 3500 would changing the gear ratio help since that effects low end power?

Yes a gear swap could help for all around driving with or w ithout cams. It could help at the 1/4 mile also but can also hurt a guy as well. If you were changing stictly for a better 1/4 mile time heres what I would do...

Make a bunch of passes with stock gears. Find your rpm and trans gear at the trap and record this. Now when chosing a gear ratio you would want to trap in the next gear at a peak hp rpm. I trapped with a fairly stock car at 99-100mph in third gear manual trans close to rev limiter(i dont recall the rpm but it was up there). Dont know how big of a gear change it would take to trap in fourth gear at 6500 rpm but that is what I would shoot for. Reason being is having to make a shift right before the end cost you mph and time. Would also suck to bang the revlimiter at the 1100 ft mark. Somewhere in this equation you have to figure your going to get there quicker and faster also. Dont want to be on the limiter in the next gear after a gear change.

This is how I am chosing the gear ratio for the bagger. Maybe I am wrong and if so please correct me because I am about to regear the bike for spring which is a bunch of cash.

May have missed it... but why were the heads thrown in before the cams were properly tuned? Saw the 280rwhp figure. But that tune wasn't 100%, just confused as to why other things went ahead when majority of people on here want to see the power increase from the cams alone. Feel free to correct me guys

I think they just said cams made about 30 hp. But yea, I was hoping for a dyno with a proper tune on the cams alone

Thanks Bob. Have the IdealG mc in the garage sitting next to the new MGW shifter. Already done the reservoir.

Have lots of experience shifting fast on two wheels in straight lines as well as turns. Will have to spend some quality time re-reading Ranger's site and practicing his suggestions then putting it to use. Like most things 10 quality practices are far better than 100 averag or poor practices. Once muscle memory is learned then its all repetitive.

Looking forward to getting back in the car - about a week and she should be here!

+1 on shifting fast on two wheels buddy. Sadly our clutch setup and feel is poor.

Couple tips I found with our manual are as follows
- slip the clutch some off the line to keep the rpms up to not bog but not spin. This is that practic part try it out in the country some before wasting time at the track. I know you practic this on the bike almost everyti.e you ride
-dont hot lap I put a hurting on my clutch hot lapping 4 passes
The following is why I suspect tracy blew the 1-2 shift on the one pass as the following has happened to me a few times now.
-if the tires are spinning I can never make the 1-2 shift hardly ever without grind pedel it right becore the shift. Seems maybe the trans shaft speed to gears gets jacked up when the tire speed quickly changes
-as for the 1-2 grind when not spinning the tires I have only experianced this right a the edge of 7000rpm. I have never ground 1-2 shift at 6500rpm. Might make that first shift at 6000-6500 just to keep for grinding and blowing a pass.

I also dont know what you did for a clutch, the master cyl mod seems great havent tryied it yet and each car and trans is different. So have fun and keep it between the ditch's

+1 approve this tip as I do it also. My clutch is still perfect and can handle the power. I maybe one of few lol, But I do get that 1-2 grind because of that dirty oil.

Cams are great, w/heads even better. Nice combo.

We will let Jim report the rest. He has a dyno scheduled on the original dyno he used for a baseline. No guarantee there will not be false knock, but he can give his on street impressions.

We just finished a heads only build also that kicks butt.

Any numbers on the heads only build?

Any reputable place in MD where I would be able to dyno my car before and after?

What are advantages of choosing to only get the heads installed over the cams?
