You will pay more for the automatic, the price of the automatic and an increase in the gas guzzler tax (about $1300 more in tax, I think).

It's taken me a little bit to get re-accustomed to a stick, but I really like it. Also, choosing a stick has virtually guaranteed me that my wife won't ever drive the car.

I chose the manual for that very same reason, just didn't want to say it out loud.

Wife - "Oh my God. why do you keep messing with that thing in the console?!?"
Me - "It's a stick shift, that's how it works"
Wife - "Holy crap. That's insane. I'm never driving this car"
Me - "So, you don't want to learn now?"

Also, definitely a theft deterrent. I love the Jalopnik articles about thieves that can't drive the car they were trying to steal.

I had my M6 SS on the track at Watkins Glen 10 times and can't imagine anything else other than manual. Probably be easier to heel-n-toe with an auto though.

I got a auto, happened to need a car and this is what was sitting on dealers floor. If I was to order one I would have gotten a manual. But with that being said I'm very happy with the auto, still use the trans just like a manual but with the paddle shifters and no clutch pushing. The auto has a higher top speed if you can find some place to do 184mph.

I chose my auto since I didn't wanna risk slipping up and shifting my manual like I do at work.

Also, it was what was available. I didn't want to wait to have one built.

OK buddy... here goes...

I was in the exact same boat last year and it was a total toss up for me. The decision is a bit different that with the SS. I was so on the fence I actually ordered an auto and then bought a manual off the lot and not because I was in a hurry... I just couldn't figure this one out.
- Cost is going to be ~2,600 more for Auto including tax
- Take a look at the 1/4 mile fast list. The Auto rules
- If you've driven an SS manual the ZL1 is no comparison, way better
- Then all the other rules apply, traffic, daily driver, knee problems etc, etc etc

Bottom line is I have the manual and wish I had the auto mainly due to the launch at the track. I got tired of the extra HP that the SS manual had over the Auto, but that is not really in play as much with the Z.

Where does one pay the gas guzzler tax? I never saw anything about paying that vs buying a manual

It's part of the MSRP price. $1300 extra for Manual and $2600 for Auto. Then another 1,185 for Auto plus another $100 or so for tax and it's ~$2,600 difference between the two out the door.

It is pretty easy to shift and this trans is smooth. You might want to add some more weight to the arm workouts to build up those shifting muscles. LOL. Just messing.

People like what they like for whatever reason. I always prefer a manual in a car like this until I am too old to shift anymore. Next generation there will be a 7 speed manual no doubt.

As stated for ZL1 $2600 auto $1300 manual in MSRP on window sticker
For SS it's $1300 auto $0 M6. At least that was the deal when I ordered my '10
m6 on both SS and ZL1 also get 1-4 CAGS
