I used to love going through the gears "back in the day" but, I have to agree with your Dad and Uncles - there are times when you just get sick of shifting and you can't not shift a M6. You can, however, have a lot of fun with the tapshifters on an A6. True, tapping is not the same as manual shifting... but it ain't bad.
As others state, the only drawback to the A6 is the AFM system. But you can tune it out or just tolerate it while cruising the Interstate (who cares and who's listening anyway) or, tap down to 5th in Sport Mode if you're in town and don't want it to kick in.

Always have owned a manual with a sporty car. Makes driving much more fun and of course you gain a bit more power over an auto.

I have an untuned L99, I came from a 2000 v6 firebird that had all the bolt ons and everything else. I have no problems with the power from the L99 haha, although I will be picking up vitesse paddles for a little more fun. The shifts in sport mode are pretty crisp. And although people hate on the AFM it does throw you an extra 1-2mpgs on the highway when you baby it.

How reliable are the manual transmissions and the clutch in the Camaro? That's another factor one should consider when deciding between the two.
Anyone with a manual have to have warranty work done, or any work/repair at all on the transmission or clutch? |

I went with manual for a couple reasons. First, I love driving, and I feel more in control with a manual. I get bored when the car does all the work for me. 100% personal preference. Second, I wanted more power. Go big or go home. Again, personal preference. Most people I know with the L99 end up trying to get LS3 conversions. You need to weigh out what you prefer. I will say that I have had other old muscle cars in the past that were autos, and I loved them, but I always wished they were manuals. The "new" of my Camaro being a manual has never worn off and I've had it for a few years.

Wow, when I first read the title of this thread I went "pfff, buy a stupid SS, whatever". I am already thinking new "SS" model of Chevrolet.
GM you have tainted the soul of Chevrolet naming your new 4-door Charger wannabe the SS. I guess it was too expensive to name it something with more letters. OP, I'd go LS3 if I was going to get a Camaro SS. |

I have a supercharged L99...car is a blast to own and drive. Paddles when I want them, cruiser when traffic is slow, or doing a cruise with a ton of cars. I love my automatic for it's duality.

dont like the idea of HAVING to shift for the rest of my life, whenever I drive the car.
I DO like the option of being able to use the paddle shifters whenever I want |

I am fortunate, I own both. The 2012 is a stick SS modified. I love it. I bought the auto 2013 for my wife. It is completely stock. Not as fun to drive as the stick. For 2013 the stock exhaust is very quiet and the AFM is not a problem.

Don't get caught up in the LS3 vs L99 thing. Think about it as a manual vs auto thing. What do you prefer? For me as a daily driver I'm pretty happy with the auto. I work nights so there is times when I'm exhausted when I'm driving home from work and the last thing I wanna do is run through the gears....just throw it in D and relax. But when I'm up in the mountains and wanna have the car in the gear I want I have the paddles. Buuuuut it's all up to you. |
