I'm just waiting to hear back from Trevor. On a side note, I let Him borrow my HHR SS until he could get his rental... he just got a ticket in it... too much POWER for Him I guess....

Only problem with replacing the entire engine means the matching numbers are out the window. To some people that would not be an issue.

These cars dont have the vin on the block or anything like old cars so numbers matching of what? That really isn't an issue with modern cars.

Correction, they do have a serial number somewhere but I still don't see that as an issue. The heads don't or other parts of the car, just the actual block.

They will cover it. They will probably be required to hook up the computer to GM to review etc. If this thing just let loose like stated I am sure they will want the engine for diagnostics. I would hope no one would mess with his car at a show.

It happens and sucks being there but GM is good at standing behind stuff, in my experience.

I can't help think some jealous dirtbag messed with his car while sitting at the show. Hope i'm wrong on this. After all the stories i've read on this forum nothing would surprise me anymore.

Do you have any other pictures of the piston? On that piece in the first post it almost looks like there is a bit of carbon buildup where the crack along the ringlands is. That might suggest the piston was cracked at an earlier time before actually falling apart when the engine blew. The owner should ask the techs to take pics when they pull it apart unless of course they are sending it off to GM. This is the problem with hypereutectic pistons. They are strong, but brittle. They will hold up to a good amount of power, but just a bit of knock can shatter them.

Well even with a rev limiter if you miss a shift you can still buzz the motor above the rev limit before it catches.

If you hit the rev limiter to long or too many times you can and eventually will break something in the valve train. From the looks of that piston, that is a big detonation to cause the engine to blow like that...... at such a low RPM.

I doubt it was detonation or anything like that. I'm still betting on a valve spring/valve letting go. That would chunk the piston up more than enough.

I would find it hard to believe that anyone messed with his ZL1 while at the car show. It was packed and we had seats right next to the car the whole time. i think with how meticulous these guys are with their cars someone would have noticed if anyone was messing with it. at least i hope thats not what happened.
