I think people are assuming it is just a piston that failed. No one knows yet. We need to see the damage. My friends z06 dropped a valve and he was picking up pieces of piston just like this. Valve drops, chews piston up then the rod punches a hole in the side of the block. I bet this is what happened in this case but until the dealer gets the motor out, who knows.
Just giving my opinion on it. However I think you're more correct, I've seen dropped valves aswell, i got a picture of a valve imbedded into a piston when that valve floated and then eventually dropped.

Then again it makes you wonder, how did the part fail to begin with?

tell me how you would know what serial number engine came in your car?

Please refer to this

Only difference being that the entire power-train for one of them was replaced for whatever reason.

Lets keep in mind here, this is a certified ZL1 without the original motor, not a generic fully loaded SS model, but is now considered a potential lemon.

Which one will have the higher resale value?

Lets not forget all the cosmetic damage that is not shown in the engine bay.
If it were me.
And i knew my engine was replaced I would do one of two things:
1) Not bother
2) Buy the car 50% below appraised value.

What if the OP didnt make this thread?
How would you know what his driving habits were if you wanted to buy it?
You gonna drop 40-60k on a used zl1 based on his word that the car dropped a valve while cruising it?
(hypothetically speaking ofcourse)

To answer your question, I'm not to sure if these newer gen iv blocks has serial numbers like the old days. However, there is a thing called a history report that pops up, and all paper work associated to it.

Im sorry but some of you guys are stupid.. I hope everything works out forv the guy. This was a parts failure. Nothing put in the tank caused this.. had to be a broken retainer or vslve stem causing the head to break off..

You guys trying to tell this guy his car isnt going to be worth anything are just idiots. . There is NO DEVALUATION of that cars worth over this. These cars are not collectors cars, they are no t limited runs and if you know how the system works you would know there ia no way to know the engine was replaced unless you went and ran the number through the service system..

Im not even going to get into how stupid the " demand a new car" thing is

Your car will get fixed, prob be better than new and just be glad that the faulty part did its thing while under warranty. .

I agree completely. But I read somewhere that Barrett Jackson is saying that the convertible ZL1 could possibly be a collectors item in the future. But his is a hardtop not convertible.

I know Trevor and his ZL1. Ive invited him to go drag racing 3 plus times and autocrossing a couple times to see the similarities to my zl585 SLP Camaro but his response was always Naaa. Trust me this car was never beat! Mechanical failure due to defective part ! Gauranteed...

I also Know Trevor here in Utah. He has never raced his ZL1 or modded anything. he never wanted to chance voiding his warranty. it's gotta be a part failure.

Hope your back on the road soon brother!

It was Haggerty, not Barrett Jackson that said they thought the ZL1 Vert and the Corvette 427 Vert would be collectible in the future.
