Oil color and validity
For those of you that think you have calibrated eyes and oil analyzing fingers, here is a pic of my cut open Wix 57060 that had approximately 6500 miles on it which was the last half of the OLM period. This oil is not dirty or contaminated other than average/normal characteristics. That oil had 13,504 miles on it in our Camaro.

I don't think you can determine the state of the oil by visual inspection. What filter cutter are you using and are you happy with it? I have been planning to buy one.

Exactly why I posted this. Looks and feel mean diddly poo 99% of the time. The filter cutter is from Longacre and works great. I got it from Amazon.

This filter (Amsoil EA15K-50) and Mobil1 5w-30EP was installed/put in at the end of Nov last year. Since then the OLM went from 100% to 0% oil life left which took us 12,221 miles. I took a sample when I changed the oil and have the results in hand. The results show that the oil was still in great shape and could have gone a little longer. I'll post the oil analysis later or tomorrow.

I know I am old school...
If you want to know the condition of your oil, send it out for testing. Filter cutting is good for a race car when you are checking for metal caught by the filter with a magnet trackside. When I track a car it goes on track with fresh fluids. All of them. When the track day or weekend is done all the fluids are changed. All of them. My daily drives are not the usual daily drives. If I don't get to a track session in 3,000 miles or 3 months the engine oil is changed. Oil is cheap. Failed engines, trannies and diffs are expensive. |

+1 on the Amsoil sauce and container. Been running both in the Escalade for 3 years and now in the SS. Good stuff.

I'm with Pete on this. Plus personal experience.
My buddy had a mid 80's Chev 4x4 with 300,000 miles on it. He changed the oil every 3-4000 miles. The thing ran like a top and burned no oil. My other buddy had the same truck with 275,000 miles on it. He changed his oil about every 5-7000. His truck smoked and the lifters sounded like a sewing machine, then it started knocking. Done.
