single bolt cam vs 3 bolt...
Is there really that big a difference?ordered a single bolt cam by accident....but i notice everyon goes 3 bolt. Do i have to worry about the single bolt breaking or something???

Been covered numerous times. A little searching of this section will yield quite a few hits.

Main thing is use a new bolt properly torqued and proper dowel pin length in the cam. Make sure the dowel doesn't protrude and hit the cam bolt and give a false torque reading.

ARP makes they bolt iirc, don't forget a dab of red loctite on the bolt torqued down properly and a dab on the retainer plate bolts and a dab of red rvt on the corners where the timing cover meets the block. Happy modding.

If you do go with a single bolt I would drill the cam gear and cam shaft for a second dowel pin!!! I have seen what happens when the single dowel fails, gear gets off center of cam, valves hit pistons, push rods bend...the list goes on!!! Just my 2 cents...its your head ache when it happens!

I would return it and go with a 3 bolt. The way i see it is there is a reason why everyone goes 3 bolt

Its not the dowl pin that causes failures...the doll pin is only to index the gear, it is mainly the bolt. Single use, and MUST be properly torqued and the pin depth measured to make sure it does not interfere in the torque procedure. Heck, single bolt cams are on 1000 plus HP engines all over the world w/out issue. Now have a catastrophic failure at 6k RPM and the gear will shear the dowl pin stopping at that rpm, and failures IMHO are installer caused. Now that said, the 3 bolt is traditional and stronger in the event of a engine seizing at WOT....but then thats the least of your problems.
Just talk to Texas Speed on their VVT cams....done correctly there are no failures. |
