what exactly is droning?
i'm still a little new to the whole car scene and i'm pretty confident when i say i know a good chunk about Camaros and cars in general. however, i dont know what people mean when they say "droning" in the persective that if i get a new exhaust for my car then it will drone bad because of the AFM.

Drone is when you have a slight humming sound in cabin from the exhaust. Depending on some exhausts it isn't that bad but on others it's horrible. I have drone in my V6 when I'm going at the 70 MPH mark and yes it can get annoying if you don't have the radio on but it doesn't really affect me. It's not easy to describe but just picture a constant sound of a motor running at the 2,000RPM mark for as long as you are on that speed.

about the best way to explain is exactly what was just said..
it differs between exhaust types. best thing to do is to figure out how loud you want to go and ask questions from there.. even better is listen to others cars and ask them what they are running. and what type and how much interior noise they have and how much drone/reverberation they get in the cab.. a good question to ask is can you carry on a normal conversation at crusing speed.

Ever ride on a passenger jet near the engines and hear that constant humming? That is drone and depending on the frequency it can be VERY annoying real fast.

Picture a hang over and your girlfriend won't stop talking. Our Borla drones a little in sixth gear at 70, but if you go into 5th it's fine, or speed up stops it. It's the price of haveing a better sounding exhaust. As stated some are worse than others, and some people don't define it as droning they just say it sounds like an aftermarket exhaust..

They make drone free mufflers. Search it you'll see plenty of choices.

I have the MRT 2.0 and it has some drone. Personally doesn't bother me. It really bugs my wife's newest puppy - which means I love it even more! No more riding w/ the puppy!
BTW - I love all four of our pups. Just not in the Camaro. |

humumumumumummm sound that is typically found around 1600 - 2200 rpms (varies slightly from car to car).
It's usually not all that bothersome in city driving. But get on the highway for a long drive, and bad drone can drive you crazy (and give you a headache). It can make having a conversation with someone else in the car almost impossible if the drone is bad enough. Some guys don't mind it (usually the younger crowd). Most older (more mature) drivers hate bad drone. Choose your aftermarket exhaust properly, and you can have a nice aggressive exhaust with little to no drone. |
