The ZL1 set a new standard when it was released with a redesigned front fascia, heat extractor, rear diffuser, spoiler, exhaust and ground effects BUT it was STILL THE SAME CAR!! They just added different plastic pieces. This refresh is much smoother and clearly more refined. If they refresh the ZL, then they are just a bunch of cruel auto A$$holes! I love my car and I don't think I want to jump in the market of buying and trading every time GM decides to 1UP themselves. SO please Scott or someone here with intimate knowledge; tell us that GM won't be screwing us few proud ZL1 owners.
It was in the GM release that the ZL1 will keep the same front end and hood as 12 and 13. According to them this was necessary due to cooling and aerodynamics. However the rear end will be the new style. It would be nice though if GM would let us know more about the future of the ZL1 next year. It's kind of like "oh yeah there is still a ZL1 model too". They have only mentioned bits and pieces about it so far.

With the z28 they have already done all of the work setting the camaro up for dry sump engines. This would give the z28 a year to be the flashy new model and pick up sales. In 2015 the zl1 could regain it's title of the top tog as the 5th gen rides into the sunset. It would also be the last time that the ls9 engine would be used as it is being retired.
Theny they would be taking the $60,000 ZL1 over the $70,000 Z28...don't know too many people that would pay $75,000-$80,000 for a Camaro.
And the Zr1 beats the Z06 because it has 133 Hp advantage and only weighs 200 lbs more. The ZL1 weighs 300 more than the Z28 and only has about a 70 hp advantage and the R-compound tires and ceramic brakes on the Z28 will put it out of reach even if they weighed the same.
The Z28 is going to be a monster...forget #2 on the Lightning Lap list for this year. Its going to be well up on the complete list

Weird how almost everyone is expecting a stripped down very few perks Z28 to cost more than the loaded most powerful Camaro ever made ZL1, it wont, it will be cheaper...And a few of you ZL1 guys need to come in off the ledge, my god....lol....Also, lower level mustang owners need not chime in on this thread...really a 12 gt, and an old timer 98 what gives you authority here, lol...

I for one will be keeping my ZL1. No ac, no radio, seriously? If I wanted an all out racecar I would buy a COPO , oh wait I guess I tried, twice.. :(

The Z28 will be on the same pricing level as the ZL1. It is built for a purpose and i feel it meets that. It's about the customer and what they want. People are angry that the Z28 isn't just a hopped up SS. Get over it.

To those who think the Z28 will be cheaper than the ZL1, i challenge you to tell me how. I'll tell you why it will be on the same price level.

Engine:
LSA Crate: $14,000
LS7 Crate: $17,000

Wiring harness: If memory serves, I read that the wiring not being utilized in the Z28 due to it's lack of stereo, etc, that they are removing the wires from that harness. In a manufacturing environment, this has the potential to cost more as it will be a unique part no to the Z28 with less #s of it being made and possibly just removing un-used wires from the current harness which could mean more labor cost.

Rear window: The rear window of the Z28 is lighter. Again, in a manufacturing environment, you have to assume that GM is getting a bargain on the rear windows for the current Camaro line-up, keeping cost down due to buying bulk. Again, this window is Z28 specific, adding price/labor to the vehicle.

Brakes: Depending where you read, carbon ceramic brakes cost in the ballpark of $8,000-15,000.

So tell me again how the Z28 will be cheaper?

From a manufacturing / production stand-point, for GM to sell the Z28 at a cost that is sub $55K MSRP would be minimal profit, while this is not an unheard of thing for car manufactures to do (Look at VW producing the Bugatti Veyron/Supersport, they sell the car for less than it cost to make!) it would be solely for the benefit of the buyer. Which from a business standpoint is unwise for a company that just emerged from bankruptcy recently.

The Z28 will be an amazing car, just like the current ZL1 is, but when you add in the cost of the performance parts, it will place the price of the Z28 above the ZL1 unless GM eats some of that cost for the benefit of the Z28 buyer.

My first car was a 1987 Z28. This was my favorite car till I got my ZL1. As much as I want the Z28, I want it to also be able to be a daily driver like the ZL1. I feel GM missed the mark on the Z28 but that is ok because they nailed it on the ZL1.

I took my name off the list at my dealership for the Z28 even though I really want to park it next the ZL1. It just is not the car I feel they should have made.

On a side note have the ZL1 out from storage for the winter for the 1st time this morning and I could not be happier and more excited to drive it. BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED!!!

Or you could just drive your 1LE or ZL1 to the track with your A/C, Nav, and killer stereo and turn the same lap times since most of us aren't pro drivers and won't get that little extra out of the Z28 anyway. Most of us don't go for that extra second or two because we don't want to wreck our cars, and it's just as fun driving on the track anyway.
I agree, the hood bulge was widened which washes out the effect of the hood and the contour of the front end. Take a look at the 70 SS with the cowl induction hood, well defined and distinct. GM could have added a tasteful louver to the existing hood like the ZL1 and the job would have been done. The refresh was over-thought in my opinion.

Did everyone listen to the exhaust clips of the Z/28? Sounds great. I want those tri-y headers and 3" exhaust. Curious to see how those wheels would look on a ZL1 as well.

I want a set of those wheels/tires for track days. I like the way they look, but I was also planning on a set of lowering springs too. I'm not sure if I could use the springs and smaller wheels and still get it on a trailer.

I like the stance of the Z/28 a lot. Do you think the lower, stiffer Z/28 springs would work on a ZL1?
