...yes I guess the price is the elephant in the room right now....but my gosh this car, the Z/28 as is, is the meanest motor scooter and the baddest go getter. I love it.

For the first time I should be able to make it to the FEST and if all goes to plan it will be in a 2014 camaro.

I wont stop looking for a way to get a Z/28, as I have always wanted one, but I am going to have to finally pull the trigger when I graduate and at least get a 1LE.

They won't start production until 7/19, so it would be a couple of weeks after that the Fest starts. And they usually have QC holds which would delay delivery. My source of the date is from BeckyD.

Ok let's simply speculate.

GM had a 1LE "track car" that made some people quite happy.

GM had a ZL1 "All purpose car" that made another group of people really happy.

So lets say you are sitting around and you reeeeaaaaaally have a passion for the Z/28 name plate. And someone comes up and says, "gee Mr. R, we already have both of these other cars and they are equally awesome in their own right. All the tweaking we can do on the chassis and no engine change would simply PUTTING THE BADGE ON A CAR. Is that what you want?"

"Heck NO!!!!"

"Hmmmmmm, how many LS7s can we manage to get? Only a few thousand you say? Does that make the car worthy of this historic badge?"

"Not yet Mr. R. With MR shocks, great tires and the LSA that we tweaked the heck out of for the ZL1 you would still have a car less capable around the track."

"So with all this light weighting we've done on the Corvette over the years and that white Camaro SSX we built for SEMA aren't there things we can do to lighten that car? I mean we already know how to do this stuff, we simply have to choose to do it right? I mean, don't we read our own press releases? Didn't our engineers write a whole bunch of SAE papers on how to light weight a car? Am I the only one that remember what we've done that last 10 years to get weight out of our cars?"

"Yes, Mr. R, we can do all those things we've done to Corvettes, the Camaro SSX and even the Cruze Eco. We can do all those things. But now you've gone almost all the way."

"What do you mean?".

"The last piece in our arsenal is the brakes. That is what makes a track car and we know this from also from the Corvette."

"How much would that add?"

"It's about $5,000 on the Z06, but it is THE difference maker. It would be the statement maker, Mr. R. It alone will make teh Z/28 faster on the track than the ZL1"

"Hmmmmm, how would we have to price a car with all of this on it?"

"It would have to be high. It will also be rare due to the LS7, and if we make it so spartan only the TRUE DIE HARDS will want one anyway. There will be few posers that will want a car like this just to drive to work. So the price will simply be in line with the volume."

"But, Mr. R, it will be as fast as we can make this car go around the track................unless you let us eliminate OnStar too. Now THAT would make a statement"

You write like you've been in a few of those types of meetings

In the past this would have been a "See what we can do?" concept... it took big cajoneys to do it... and put it up for sale.

This one will go in the GM history books along with the original Z/28, the old and new COPO's, the porcupine motor, etc.

Anyone that's hung out here since the beginning have seen plenty of "My ideal Z/28" posts are in-line with this car, and they even went over the top with the brakes and lighter glass(your idea if IIRC), and the A/C delete.

It's simply amazing this car will make it out the front door....... Kudo's to Mr. Reuss for taking the bull by the horns, and the Camaro team for making it a reality! (insert 1,000 here)

Just guessing what might have happened to get this car to production. This car did not exist when I left.

I worked there a long time and I know there were a lot of hurdles to get this car out with a positive business case. GM is not in the business to lose money simply to get one of the most iconic name plates on a car. I would guess they had to make Mr. Ackerson just as happy as all the Camaro fans. It took a lot of engineering, testing and validation. Then we can go to the purchasing side and see how they were able to get pricing on these low volume parts. Then to the manufacturing team on how to build another model, lower volume and still meet all the quality standards.

It was as big an effort as you can imagine.

FWIW, someone "suggested" a "1LE" version...summer of '11, well before its announcement...

...and someone else "suggested" a "COPO-like Z/28" (I'm paraphrasing in both cases)...

We have been fortunate to have had "guidance", here, from time to time to keep us realistically focused...and somewhat "informed"...

Just a few more reasons for my daily drive-thru, here in the HouZe...and I'm fortunate my "frequent flyer card" has not been rescinded...yet.

I guess, as a consumer (i.e. paying customer), I mistook the business case's "necessity" to build (and therefore price) the Z/28 to levels beyond the ZL1 (as a track car/star) to receive corporate approval.

I always considered the possibility of building/pricing the Z/28 below the "all-conquerring" ZL1, and we'd have an interesting time at Lightning Lap watching the two fight it out for supremacy.

However, with the realities faced by all concerned, it DOES make sense to build the "COPO-like Track Star" the way it's being built, brakes and all. It secures the Z/28 in that sought-after perch, while leaving the price point within reason of the ZL1.

If "life is all about choices", we the fortunate have one that, prior to 12:49 PM EDST 27 March 2013, the vast majority had given up on...or simply didn't care... I also find in "interesting" that a good deal of the "negativity" surrounding this car, on camaro5, seems to be coming from ZL1-centered folks...

It would certainly be nice if GM wanted to sell the Z/28 at a loss just so we could have it. But Ackerson has been pretty clear publicly that GM isn't in that business. There may have been a day when they could have done that but with the US Treasury still holding a lot of stock I think if would be harder to justify any program without a great business case.

Now if part of the business case is the value of thumbing your nose at the competition to just show off how good your eningeering is then maybe there is a shot at the price point we are hoping for.

There is a lot more to this thread than the Z/28...... Much much more. It's odd how you can consider someone you never met a friend. I have met many of them in this thread alone.....
