"Move Over" Law - please read.......

(...Mods - pls leave in this section for a day or so...thanks...)

Good morning, Camaro Comrades, Firebird Friends, and Corvette Cousins.......

Each day, tens of thousands of men and women in Law Enforcement put their lives on the line as they go about serving and protecting us.

And yet, many are injured or killed - not by a gun or a knife, but rather by a Motor Vehicle during routine traffic stops. The same goes for EMS Responders and Firemen and Tow Truck drivers - any first responder........

For those of you who have gone through Performance Driving Schools, you've learned that it's a natural phenomenon for your hands to follow your eyes while driving....meaning that if you look at something, you're very likely to steer toward it.
.......that's the reason so many people hit the vehicle in front of them...they look right at it during a panic stop and drive into the vehicle - rather than looking at 'where they want to go' and 'steering around' the vehicle.

More than 150 U.S. Law Enforcement Officers have been killed in the last 10 years - -and untold numbers injured after being struck by vehicles along America's highways according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Because of this, most states have passed "Move Over" laws --

71% of Americans have not heard of "Move Over" laws

EVEN THOUGH......

86% support enacting "Move Over" laws in all 50 states

90% believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders.....

Forty three states have actually passed "Move Over" laws - which require motorists to "Move Over" and change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers and other first responders (including tow truck drivers...) on roadsides.

Now - obviously it's not always possible to 'move over' - and so it's important to understand THE SECOND part of this law. In cases where one CANNOT move over, it's required that you slow down - in some states, it's required that you drop your speed by as much as 20mph. What laws have been passed in YOUR state?

Simply go here: http://www.moveoveramerica.com/

---and click on your state - to learn more.

Fines and points can be steep - but on the other hand, it's necessary to get peoples' attention so that we aren't injuring - or worse, killing, those who are there to help us and to protect us.

So - how 'bout it, Friends? Can we all agree that we need to pay attention to this law and protect our First Responders? (many of which, by the way, are our very own Camaro Comrades, Firebird Friends, and Corvette Cousins...)

Please -- Share this email with those in your clubs and in your address books........

And while I'm at it - (and you've heard this a least a thousand times from me over the years....) BUCKLE UP! Each and every time - everyone in the car - no excuses!

Your Camaro Comrade:

Scott

I always follow this rule. And I know that in Florida if you can't move over you have to slow down to 10mph under the posted speed limit.

This is Law in Texas and drivers here do move over/slow down or else. (It's 20mph under here)

No reason not to slow down AND move over.

Another huge threat to Emergency Personnel are the "Looky Loo's" and Texters. Combine the two and it's deadly.

I followed this before it was a law, learned it from watching semi drivers, even give clearance for a disabled vehicle.

This!

Sad that we have to create laws that should fall under common sense.

It's law here in VA and a good one. I'm like the previous post I learned it years ago from the truckers.

Some people just don't care about others I work for the power company and with our strobes going and flashers they still don't move over until about 2 car lengths away.Don't try and put cones out around your vehicle they still don't move over.

Be alert and give the guy on the side of the road some room or at least slow the hell down.

They just mad this law in NY if I'm not mistaken. Either that or they are now enforcing it. This is a good thing, thanks for posting.

I hate when I see people speeding by without shifting over when there is an officer on the side of the road.

Safety first!

I do the same. I prefer to move over then slow down, but sometimes I can't so I just slow way down.
