It's the law here in Indiana too. I always move over for any vehicle off to the side of the road if at all possible

Great reminder!

So many old/unwritten rules of the highway seem to have gone by the wayside.....like the one in this post. Also the passing/high speed lane. Pass and get the hell outta the way! Cant believe how many I pull over for going like 40mph in the passing lane....tell me they were there because their GPS told them to!? Are you freakin kidding me??!! What happened to driver responsibility?
As a 26yr po-po vet, I simply will not make a stop on the freeway any more. You have to really pizz me off for that to happen. Just too damn dangerous!

We've had it for a couple years now ...

Now only if they could do something about texting and driving !!!

I am always careful to follow this law, but let's take it one step further. If you are in the adjacent lane, please slow down and signal to cars in the lane in question indicating that you are giving them the opportunity to move over and leave plenty of room for the safety of the officer/first responder/worker.

Too many people just completely ignore common sense rules of the road and worse than that ignore traffic signs or lights if it inconveniences them in any way. Such as no left turn signs or no U turn signs are the ones I see ignored the most.

Tennessee's move over law does not specify what speed to slow down to if you can't move over, it just says you must slow down.

After 20 years on patrol in law enforcement and countless accident scenes, i can tell you move over is a great thing. Countless stories of fellow umos getting hit and a fair amount of close calls for me.

No reason not to slow down AND move over.

Another huge threat to Emergency Personnel are the "Looky Loo's" and Texters. Combine the two and it's deadly.
20mph here, sir.

And yes. Those who text might as well be driving drunk. I can tell you I've almost been hit by a good 4 or 5 people who were next to me and swerved over in my lane. I pull up and there's the good old cell phone in their hands.

I HATE BEING ON THE HWY. We have more accidents and deaths from highway related accidents than anything else. TOO MANY.

Guys, I love life. It's great. I'd like to live it out as long as I can. If I'm on the side of the road, whether it being writing a ticket for that texting person, speeder, the guy that cut you off, or just plain old helping the elderly person who ran out of gas or changing their tire, PLEASE....give me and the other guys some space. I know we can't always move over. But, there's nothing holding you back from slowing down.

WE....the guys who love doing what we do, would GREATLY appreciate it.

And a very heartfelt thanks to Scott for posting this up. If it saved just one life....
