So, I immediately slowed down and put on my turn signal, indicating that I was following his order. About an 1/8th mile down, there was a safe place to pull off the highway and I did. The police officer then did a "Dukes of Hazzard" move and threw his car sideways in front of me, as though he was trying to keep me from going any farther (I was already stopped).

He then approached me as though I was a criminal and told me to put my hands where I could see them and asked why I was trying to "run away" from him. Honestly, I felt like saying, "If I had tried, I would have gotten away from you". Instead - I told him that I slowed down, put on my turn signal and pulled over literally an 1/8th mile later where it was safe to actually pull over for BOTH of us.

The guy then searched my car for drugs and asked me if I'd take a breathalyzer. I told him that unless he had somethign to charge me with, I wasn't taking any tests. He hadn't clocked me and had nothing to charge me with. The only suspicion that he said he had was that another officer radio'd to him earlier that he saw a Corvette going fast so this guy pulled me over acting like I had just committed robbery. Even after I explained to him why I continued to drive an 1/8th mile with my turn signal on for both our safety, his response was, "The instant you see my lights, you pull over wherever you are".

It is 20.... needless to say, no cop is going to stop you if you make a conscious effort such as 10 under to slow down. It is the people going at or over the speed limit in addition to failing to move over that we want.

Thank you again for the post... I have watched first hand an officer get launched in the air when a car failed to move over.. and that was simply from the impact of him being on the PASSENGER SIDE of the vehicle involved in a traffic crash. He would have been soup if he was on the driver side.

maybe it's just me, but this story seems somehow out of place...

A few years ago, a neighbor of mine witnessed an injury accident and had stopped to assist. No police or EMS on scene yet, but those there had their flashers on. Another vehicle came flying down the road, another good Samaritan saw him coming right at them, grabbed my neighbor and threw themselves into another vehicle. The other driver clipped the vehicle and tore her foot off. They were able to reattach it but she spent months in therapy and never walked the same again.

My dad used to be a cyclist, quit smoking and rode his bike to work everyday. On a summer day, riding home (he was a millwright), a lady decided she wanted to be where he was. So she hit him, then ran him over. He died there, was resuscitated, died again in hospital and saved again. He was never able to go back to work. And in Canada, lawsuits don't pay millions of dollars, he got maybe 2 years of income once all was said and done.

Anytime I see a vehicle on the side of the road, I will change lanes. Anytime I see a cyclist, I will give them as much space as I can.

This is all just common sense, construction, emergency workers, someone broken down, cyclists. No excuses, slow down, move over.

Just now they did this? I lived in Arizona from 1998-2002 and cops were getting hit almost every weekend near Phoenix back then. It was a huge problem.

Please move over if there is a lane. It's the law in Mass. Also, pull to the right and STOP when you see lights, even if your going the opposite direction. You don't know if the police need to turn left in front of you.

Thank you for this post. I really appreciate it.

In the last 6 months in Illinois, I have had 2 fellow troopers get struck and killed while on traffic stops. It's senseless and should not happen. We expect no one to put themselves or others in harm's way, but if you can move over it is greatly appreciated. Thanks. TM

Scott, thanks for posting. I always slow down and move over, first responders come first. Not rocket surgery to me! Only wish I could do more to help police and the military, but I'm way past my prime.
