So then you're saying nyrfan is doing it wrong, too?

Now I'm wondering how I could possibly rig up a spotlight to shine directly above the center of my garage door...

I think the "direct spot light" thing is mostly for stand-alone flagpoles....
...there's a ton of flag etiquette, but if it is displayed respectfully on your own home, with lighting at night, I'd say you're ok...don't stress...

There are a lot of flag companies on-line, or google it, that will have info on proper flag etiquette for any display situation, or type of structure...

I think I am ok. May not be the "proper" way, but I think it's ok.

I think so too, but the last thing I want to do is offend any veterans in or around the area.

I have quite a few veterans on my block, including my FIL. None have ever said anything to me or I would have corrected it.

I think most vetrerans would just be happy to see you displaying the flag!

No respect!
Next time that realtor brings prospective buyers by be sure you turn your music up loud enough that they can hear/feel the bass notes as you're doing burnouts in your driveway. Call your biker friends and ask them to roll by a few times as well. Do some guard dog drills with your rottweiler and be a friendly guy and ask the prospective buyers if they have any cats and well, be sure to keep 'em in cuz ol Rocky there ain't so good with kitties.
It's always fun to see a real estate agent cry.

Maybe your flag is too big and flying into the next lot over? Lol maybe it's been foreigners moving into the neighborhood? Have you noticed an influx of immigrants? Maybe the would be home buyers were pissed because they own a camaro and want to fly their US flag but you beat them to the punch!

It's probably good that they passed on purchasing. They probably would have let their dandelions spread into your yard! I'm joking, but honestly, if they have no respect for the flag, they more than likely care even less about their lawn.

Fly it high, fly if proud!

Illumination

The U.S. flag is traditionally flown from dawn to dusk so that it is always illuminated by the sun. It is allowed to be flown at night under certain guidelines, however. Since it must always be illuminated during the day, the same holds true for the night. A floodlight or spotlight must be shown on the flag. This is simple enough to do by placing a floodlight on the ground under the flagpole.

That's right out of the book, so you can see here by this post most people just don't know. As a veteran I'm glad to see flags flying, but it is respectful to do it properly.
