Federal law stipulates many aspects of flag etiquette. The section of law dealing with American Flag etiquette is generally referred to as the Flag Code. Some general guidelines from the Flag Code answer many of the most common questions:

Tell the realtor that anyone not wishing to live next to you due to the flag will NOT be any neighbor of yours!
Tell them they'd better find someone who would accept it and be happy about it or you'll GIVE'EM HELL! AND....it appears from the looks of these last few posts (or all of them....) that pretty much EVERYONE here agrees. THREAD STAYS OPEN. |

It's difficult to refrain from being judgmental when you are dogging on people for being judgmental. I'll try...no I won't
Here's an interesting concept, when considering buying a new house go meet the neighbors yourself instead of asking some salesman who wouldn't know jack s*@t about it anyway..... You IDIOOOTS ! To the OP, yes your story is sad,, weird and funny all in one.

Yeah, you wouldn't want neighbors like that. Sounds like they would poke their nose into your business. Still, it is both maddening and depressing to hear that.

As I'd stated earlier - I find that it's incredibly sad that people don't respect the flag - and even more sad that so many never fly the flag.
It's not expensive to do - but one DOES have to provide light for it. That's pretty easy to do: You can purchase a staked spotlight at any hardware store -- it can be plugged into any outdoor electric socket. Or - as in the case at "Mom" Settlemire's home - we use a low-wattage spotlight to shine "up" to the flag on a pole at the end of her sidewalk. Malibu and Toro and Hampton Bay make these - and they're pretty simple to install. I had some concerns about lighting the flag - and while I'm not sure who can 'interpret' what entails adequate lighting - I DID ask a Security Director at the Pentagon (when I visited with the American Pride Camaro last year) - - what was appropriate. He felt that most people are able to fly a flag next to an outdoor light -- the point is that you need to 'illuminate' the flag rather than leave it in darkness. So - for instance - if you have a lantern-type light next to your garage door - it MAY create enough light to 'illuminate' the flag -- and that would be acceptable. Again - I'm not trying to interpret....but what I WOULD like to see is: >>>All Americans (and Canadians with their flag...) fly the flag as much as possible<<< We sometimes forget the unimaginable sacrifice by so very many to allow us to live in the greatest countries the world has ever known.
