The daily driver was a spare delete car. I drive 80 miles a day.

The local Kmart had GM Goodwrench scissors jacks on clearance for 10 bucks, and I found the donut spare on Craigslist for 20. I still have the factory compressor setup on board, as well as a plug kit, criss-cross wrench and large flashlight. Done.

I bought a 2LT/RS and found it annoying that it didn't have a spare (i personally dont have time to wait for roadside assistance in most cases). I went ahead and bought the donut and jack kit form the dealer for $350.00 within the first week of having my car. It was worth it. My piece of mind is priceless. I still keep the compressor in the trunk as well though. Its come in handy plenty of times when my tires need topping off.

With my SS, which none of them have a spare, I bought a used stock front rim, new tire, and the jack/lug wrench from the dealer. I keep them all in my trunk at all times so now I can fix a flat myself if ever needed.

This is exactly what I am doing now. I just ordered an oem front wheel and a tire this week. Going to get a jack, wrench, wheel chocks, tire plug kit and store it in the trunk. Don't even like to think about being out on the road with a flat tire and not being able to put on a spare and be on my way. A tow truck for a flat tire is like calling an ambulance for a stubbed toe. Tire plug kit or the sealant kit that comes with the car will be the last resort.

Will the spare you got from the dealer fit over the brakes without a spacer?

I bought an aftermarket spare and it needs a thick spacer, but it would be a lot more convenient if it didn't need one. It's a pain in the ass to change a tire but it would beat walking if you get a flat someplace with no cell service.

I just bought a cheap set of RS 20" wheels so that I can carry a spare on long interstate trips. Is it the rear wheels that will fit on all corners or the fronts that will?

I hope it's the fronts since they're smaller... Sorry about reviving the "Zombie Post" again, but I have the same concerns of some others posting here, especially on road trips.

Thanks,

Tara

On an SS with stock wheels and tires, a person would want a front wheel and tire to carry as a spare. Your 1LE has wider wheels and tires than the SS. And I believe the stock 1LE tire diameter is about .82 smaller than the SS. You may want to ask these questions on the 1LE section above. Im thinking if I had a 1LE that I would get a stock front wheel and tire to carry as a spare. Or get any 20" wheel that fits and clears the brakes and get a tire with the same diameter as your stock tires.

GMTool,

Thanks for the answer! So it's one of the front wheels that I need to use as a spare. The outside diameter was one of my concerns when I buy a tire for the rim (the rims have worn-out Pirellis on them now.) I'll make sure the diameter of the spare has similar, if not the same diameter as the stock Goodyear F1s.

Thanks again,

Tara

Make sure those RS wheels will fit your car before you get a tire. Im not sure about all of that. I believe your 1LE front wheels are 10" wide and the rears are 11". The front wheel of the RS ones are 8" wide and the rears are 9. Im only real sure about the SS wheels and tires. I was just saying that if it were me with a 1LE I would probably buy a stock front wheel for a 1LE and use it for a spare as long as it would fit/clear the rear also. The diameter of your spare needs to be the same as your stock 1LE's

GMTool,

Thanks, but 1LE/ZL1 wheels are hard to get and way out of my price range. I have the extra set of RS 20" wheels and just need to know if fronts or rears will work on all corners of the Camaro. I see from this other old thread about widening rims for the rear, they're putting stock rears on the front. Now I've heard that both ways work. Does anyone know for sure that rear rims work as fronts and/or will front rims work on the rear (or will both work?)

Thanks to anyone who can help shed light on this. I only want the security of a spare tire when I travel interstate. Seeing the factory 10 spokes are so hard to find and my Goodyear Eagle F1s are order-only at local tire shops, I don't want to be caught stranded with a road debris-related failure and not being above to drive the car.

Thanks to anyone who can help with info,

Tara

This would involve some work, but since you have the RS 20" wheels, why don't you remove a front and a rear from your car and try the RS wheel on each? That would answer all your questions and you could be certain of your decision rather than carrying a spare that someone else told you should fit and waiting until you need it to find out.

If you find the rear RS wheel won't fit, you might be able to use a spacer to push it out a bit. That's a pain in the butt, but it's better than nothing. I got mine from Randy Maddox performancespare@gmail.com. I don't know if he is still selling them.
