![]() Sorry, but I would defy anyone to back this up with real data. The residual oil will be enough to ensure a start. We are talking thin film. Obviously, continued operation is a different story. |

I have been using Fram in my cars most all of my driving life. My Dad did same before me never had an issue in all that time.

Again. Nobody ever said it the engine wouldn't start. But it's a pretty simple concept. More oil in the block/heads at startup means that there is a better chance of a quieter "smoother" startup, due to the presence of the oil-both in the fact that it would be more than a 'thin film' and also that it does not have to travel up from from the pan to circulate though the engine. |

Pic of an ACDelco PF48 guts. Metal end caps. Anti drainback valve. Spring loaded pressure relief valve. High quality media. No felt end caps here, mr Fram was spreading some bad info earlier in the thread. The PF 48 is not made by Fram. A PF48 is the perfect filter for LS engines. Works perfect and is the only filter covered by the factory warranty. Have a problem with any other brand filter and you're on your own. When I was a tech, never once saw a problem with an ACDelco filter. Saw tons of problems with the cheaper aftermarket stuff, especially Frams and Purolators... they are garbage. ... and a bad drain back valve can cause starting issues. Most noticeable will be the lifter knock. But can also cause hard starting or rough running briefly as some of the lifters may be collapsed... some valves not hardly opening much.

To all that used fram oil filters back in the day and never had a problem, I say that todays engines are a whole different ball game. Also using oils like castrol GTX, yesterdays oil for yesterdays engines.
Today we ( at least I) use Mobil 1 5W40 year round. So far so good, and only OEM filters. |

Interesting, RJ.
The only oil filter I have ever had trouble with was the one time I could not find a Fram and had to buy an AC. Haven't bought another AC since. Maybe a freak occurrence, but figured it was not worth the risk. |

If automobile manufacturers really wanted to cut down on wear, every car would have a tank that pressurizes when the engine is running, filled with a quart or two of oil. The tank would hold that pressure after the car is shut off. As you restarted the car, the oil would be released before the starter engages and there would be no more dry starts, resulting in tons less wear. Of course it's not all that simple, for instance, you wouldn't want the delay if you stalled your car in traffic, etc.
Smokey Yunich wrote the above idea in a column in a magazine I read back in the 70's about how cars could easily be made to get over a million miles on the engines and get better gas mileage. Three guesses why manufacturers don't do it, and the first two don't count. John B.
