Oil Change question?

Not very long ago I got an Oil Change. Don't remember exactly how long but it hasn't been 3,000 miles yet. However, my dash says there's only 19% of oil life remaining? How can this be?

Sorry if this is a "noob" question.

The OLM(oil life monitering system) probably wasn't reset... if so it would have said 100% right after the oil change. To reset I think you just have to not be moving and then take the option to reset through the DIC(Driver Info. Center)
good luck

Not too noob of a question. often the oil change places don't like to touch too many things like that so that would be the reason why they didnt reset it

So should I just reset it now and it will give me a more accurate percentage?

I would just change it every 5K miles regardless. In another 2K miles get it changed and remind them to reset it.

No because there is mileage on the oil. To make it accurate you need to do an oil change and then reset it.

I dont go by that percentage thing. Every 5000 miles is easy to keep track, and it wont sneak up on you

Since we are on the topic, anybody know when a dealer would change your oil based on the OLM? 20%? Based on my driving, it'd be more than a year before I hit 5,000 miles.

What type of oil did they use? If they used regular non synthetic motor oil the oill life might at it end. If they used full synthetic motor oil then you be able to go the 5000 miles.
A lot of use Mobil1 synthetic motor oil.

10% by the owners manual. should put you between 5k and 7500k depending on how you drive. thats the beuaty of the OLM, it bases your change interval on your drving habits. where 5k might be perfect for the guy that drives city to and from work 5-10 miles in stop and go traffic 5 days a week, its a complete waste of money for people who only cruise the open roads on the weekends

I would mark the current mileage, not bother with resetting the oil life just yet and see when it tells you to change. You said you changed less then 3000 miles ago, I would say go another 2000 maybe 3000 and then change unless you have a set interval you were going to change at and take that into account. I have the LFX engine and had planned on 7k oil change intervals but the system come up to change at around the 5700 mark in the last change. The system takes into account a lot of factors. Mine told me to change when it hit less then 5% oil life left.

Dean.

My olm usually gets to like1/5% at about 7000 miles if you got 1/9%left and you driven about 3000 i would leave it untill it tells you to change it than reset it after you change it
Its rel easy when your in park keep pushing the button on the dic until it shows oil life shows than keep it pressed until it resets

I'm glad to hear other people doing it every 5k. That's how I do it and it is very easy to track. Doing it every 3k miles to me is a waste of money unless you drive it very hard or live in a very dusty place (El Paso, etc). Most owners manuals state 7500 but I don't have mine because I got it used. I've seen people on here saying the more often the better, and I guess in theory that is 100% accurate. But whether it is completely necessary (monetary concerns, type of driving the individual does, the return on your investment i.e.-increase the engine life from 210,000 to 215,000 miles vs the investment needed to do so) is another question.

Regardless, we all love our cars and will do what we feel is right.
