I was looking for the ECF when I found the one with the painted insert. I fell in love with it immediately. I honestly dont think you could go wrong with either one. But I have NO complaints about the painted one on my Victory Red.

I have the exposed insert on my mine, and my dad has the painted insert on his Yellow ZL1. I was really liking the idea of the exposed insert from the very beginning. However, after seeing my dad's, I like the painted one a lot too. Because of that, if I were to get a second ZL1, I would save the money on the exposed insert and just get the painted one. I especially like it on the Ashen Gray, because it's color-matched to the rest of the car. I would like it the least on a Black car, because it would look closer to a color-match fail.

So I placed my order with the ECF insert (and the bright 5-spoke wheels). I'm so glad that I did because it looks fanatastic with the ECF.
Hello littlecammi,

We are glad you are happy with your choice. We would love to see some pictures of the final product.

Flat back on my AGM . Had dealer change it from ECF before delivery. Looks great and would not change it. To each their own

It came stock on the car, however, it's been customized.

Exposed is so much better, do not get a Z without it.

While the painted insert doesn't get the same "Wow, that's cool" response that the ECF does, from all angles other than directly above, the inserts are virtually indistinguishable due to the reflection of the clear. Without the ECF, there's really no temptation or need for me to use HydroDip or vinyl "carbon fiber" to complement the "theme".

Besides that, I have an "option" that no 2012 ZL1 has, and only a few 2013 ZL1's, a body colored insert from the factory.

I don't care about "someday" value, but even for right now it's rare. Most people that know anything about the ZL1 are expecting an ECF insert. When they see a body color insert they assume it's custom, when I tell them it came that way, I get a great "Whoa, that's cool!" response.

If you can forgive the "whoring", here are some of my pics of AGM ZL1 with the AGM insert.
Great photos! You have one great looking ride there!!

could not agree more. the black car with ashen gray is the only combo with the painted like because the black with carbon loses its contrast just like ahshen gray car with ashen insert.

I really liked the Flat black 2012 insert but the fact you can't wax it is an extra step of covering it when you wax.

I see this totally different than most. Even if I wanted painted for the $600 option pirce I would buy the exposed insert to just flip it. you know how much you could sell that for. you can buy repo's to paint if you just want a specific color for way less. be like $750-850 painted

I think the exposed piece is $3200 and they are hard enought to get it would sell.

This all gets down to personal preference. There is no right answer. I bought my SIM with painted insert because I liked how it looked with the stripe package (exact match). The carbon fiber insert is a cool look but since it's the only carbon fiber element on the car it kind of seems showy and only there as a status object. Plus from 5 feet away you don't even notice it. IMO carbon fiber is not the big deal it once was and I didn't want to spend 600 bucks for it. It's great that it is an option for those that want it. I never though about making money off it, but that is a great idea. I could have sold mine and used all that money for mods... Damn, missed opportunity..

I have to disagree with you on the profitability of flipping the ECF insert and then replacing it with a Painted insert.

A quick search on the GM part numbers shows only a very slight price difference at MSRP $338.53 and only $211.25 from this reseller.

The first thing my wife said (when we went to the dealer last Wednesday to sign papers so both our names would be on the title) when she saw my 2013 IOM ZL1 with ECF was that she really liked the hood insert. She knew I'd ordered my Camaro in orange but she'd never seen a ZL1 before so she was expecting the car to have rally stripes on the hood and trunklid.

Really? I suggest a visit to your opthamologist. It's quite apparent from a distance. It really sets the car off!
