You did the right thing by speeding off. Fortunately, there were no other cars around. But legally, if you had a carry permit, you could have shot him if he was coming at you with a hammer. That IS a weapon, and he could have killed you with it. So your life was in danger and you could have legally protected yourself with a firearm. If there were cars in front of you, and you couldn't have sped off like that, a gun would have been your only way out. My Glock rides with me in my Camaro every single time I sit behind the wheel.
