Gas Milage Test performed today.
So yesterday I started a thread asking if coasting downhills with the clutch held in would hurt the clutch but more importantly would it give me a little better gas milage. Well, I thought I was gaining around 10% in MPG using that method, but I was certainly WRONG. I did a 100 mile highway drive today on I-87 in upstate New York...lots of hills and flat spots...(georgeous drive btw). I kept the speed around 75 MPH, drove conservative, and didnt coast once. I just had it in 6th gear 99% of the time. Going down hills I either completely let off the throttle or very lightly applied it to maintain speed. I did NOT gain anything over my "coasting down hills" technique. I'm a little surprised but I am absolutely giddy that I have a Camaro SS with over 400 horses at the wheels and I averaged 24.5 MPG. That's fargin' awesome! I'm done coasting....

If you drove 100 miles all on a highway and kept the speed around 75, while driving conservatively, and you only got 24.5? That blows....according to GM we are supposed to get 28-30 on the highway. Actually I get about the same on the hw in my measly 6 but throw in city driving for about 30% of he time and it drops to about 20.5. Anybody that swears they are getting close to 30 either are blowhards or aren't accurately measuring their mileage. There can't be that much difference from one 6 to another, or one 8 to another.

well actually if you figure that you are low geared enough to only be at 2500 rpm at 75 vs 6-7 coasting doing hills...Yes you do not save that much in gas milege.

I have had people ask me about gas mileage and my usual answer is hell I don't know or care when it needs gas I fill it up again.

hmmmmmmm......here we go again..... ![]() There are those of us (V8 or V6) getting good fuel mileage, and there are those of us who aren't and are pissed off at those who do........LOL Its this kind of crap that never ceases to amaze me.....too funny I get awesome mileage according to my DIC, and even better mileage when I figure it the old fashioned way with a calculator, I am done posting my results becasue the haters are going to call . I really don't care though, after all it is ME that pays for the fuel that I put into my car. I bought the V6 mainly for the fuel savings, if it didn't save fuel with all the miles that I do (500 a week) then I will have to get rid of it.......hmmmmm ....I still have it after a year and a half! Lets just say it gets better than advertised.

it just becomes a competition to outdo the other one. fact is, you might get 10-20% over the EPA numbers maybe even 30% if your some kind of hyper-miler or something. but otherwise, yea, it's just BS. some of the claims people make are just incredible |

Depending on how steep the hills are, you may do better staying in gear. With the clutch in, the engine still idles....if you get fully off throttle in gear, the fuel cuts off completely.

I just went on a 200+ mile trip, 90% freeway, cruise set at 76MPH, and I got just over 27MPG (calculated, not DIC--though the DIC showed 26-something). Filled up again yesterday, reset everything, and my 70 mile round trip commute (70% freeway/30% city) got me 25-something MPG indicated on the DIC thus far.

No BS here!

Thats basically it. I used to coast down hills all the time thinking I was helping to improve mileage...I live in a hilly area...keeping it in gear tho is def better I've just learned. Call me slow, say I'm beating a dead horse, call my post bs if you want. Personally FOR ME I'm just saying I've learned something new and and voicing my admiration for the efficiency of MY LS-3. For those who say its BS that my LS-3 gets better mileage than their V6....I've got no answer for ya. But I do not BS. 100 miles highway on hilly terrain at 75mph and @1850 RPM = 24.5 MPH

I would think if GM says you're supposed to get 30mpg on the highway it doesn't mean going 75mph. More likely 50-60 mph which would be a considerable difference. If you were concerned about mileage a sports car shouldn't have been the choice IMO.
