Am I crazy or did I see this Camaro in a Super Chevy issue from 99/2000?

Back when I was in high school, around 99 or 2000, a friend gave me this magazine with an artist rendition of what the new camaro was going to be like. It was orange, and the picture was on the cover and in an article in the magazine. I think it was super chevy might have been something else but I doubt it.

When I saw it it was quite striking because it dropped the trend of extra elongation (last gen was a boat!) for new models and was much more the size of a regular car.. and it also had the very retro look. Like a 69 camaro with very modern features. My memory might have been clouded with the new actual camaro but I distinctly remember it was very close.

But it seems like they had just started planning this camaro in the last 5 years. So did the artist just have really good foresight?

Don't think so.. it was more orange and more like an artist drawing than a cgi..

seems like this kind of style must have been on people's minds for a while

Could it have been this one?

I don't know when that sketch was created, but it came with the welcome kit if you pre-ordered.

Definitely could not have been that one, that was drawn in late 2006 after the original camaro concept was drawn.

I know what he talking about, for many years there were "retro" redesigns floating around in the magazines. I'm sure probably more than one looked vaguely similar to the finished product.

This was one of the many concept ideas. The first one was orange and it was created not in a magazine but an internet site. This is what got my intrest early on, these ideas were thought up way before the 2006 concept was reveiled. I was in a IT class room in 2005 when these came out. Also it was designed to be released in 07 but got moved to 08 then 09! here is the site with the pics:

Honestly i love the Orange one but it is kind of small.

Gm had planned on dumping the 4th gen before it was redone in 98 and got the LS1 (it was never supposed to end up making it that far).. Some say the canadian auto workers union was the reason and others have their own reasons but the fact was they planned on killing the 4th gen long before they did (articles in 99 were already talking about 2002 as the final year) and already had their sights set on making the next gen car. I remember back in 96 several reviewers were even talking about the 5th gen and what it might be like. If you read up on the plant closing and the 4th gen hiatus you will find there was a 'blackout/hush' of sorts and no one was even allowed to utter the name for several years. That doesn't mean people weren't thinking about it or even working on what it would look like, at least officially.

As soon as I saw this back in the early 2000s...I was like...come on GM. You have to do this.

Was it red and white? Hand-drawn? Z/28 on the back? I think that was in a Super Chevy I'lll see if I can find it.
