RATTLING/GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE

I JUST INSTALLED MY ROTO-FAB CAI AND WHEN I STARTED HER UP, I NOTICED A RATTLING/GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE MOTOR. I NEVER HEARD THIS NOISE WHEN THE OEM AIR INTAKE WAS ON. MY CAR ONLY HAS AROUND 300 MILES ON IT. I SAW A POST ON HERE BY VROOM ABOUT HIS SC GOING BAD AND IT SOUNDS LIKE HIS DID, JUST NOT AS BAD YET. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING FROM THE SNOUT, PROBABLY THE ISOLATOR GOING BAD. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS? AM I HEARING THINGS OR CAN YOU GUYS HEAR IT TOO? SORRY FOR THE POOR VIDEO

That's how mine went too. It started right after I changed the air filter. get the sound on video, which I know is pain since its sporadic, and take it in. they'll have it replaced in a couple days.

IIRC, The isolator does normally make 'some ' noise by design.
If the noise is 'excessive' they will replace the entire SC assembly and not just the isolator because the entire unit is considered a replacable unit.

Who determines if the noise falls within normal limits or is considered excessive? Good question

RIP to your supercharger
gone but not forgotten

Everyone go pull your S/C and clean the oil out, then install a catch can!
The oil build up will mess with the bearings/rotors and eventually cause your s/c assembly to make nasty noises and maybe fail!

I listened to vrooms video and in my opinion your motor sounds nothing like his. His you could hear the hard grind, I don't hear that in your video. what I hear in your video is exhaust and upper motor warm up?

I listened to the video, and my previous 2012 sounded exactly the same. It sounds like the coupler noise (marbles rattling in a can), not the squeeling of a bearing or some other part failure within the supercharger as heard in another video. I hated the noise and heard it since the car was new, but it didn't get any louder with my RotoFab. I didn't worry too much about it, since I planned on changing the upper pulley and going to a solid coupler.

his sounds about right. it's very hard to capture. in his video you can hear the slight squealing at the start of the video. most the time mine would sound just like that at startup and it was so subtle I couldn't ever catch it before it disappeared behind the isolator noise. took a week to capture the noise in the video.
the noise sounds horrible, and it will get worse, but I don't think it's going to hurt anything. I also had a slight surging as the car would settle to a constant speed after accelerating that only I noticed.

...there are several threads on this noise issue that has been an ongoing concern...Eaton,... the manufacturer, decided to place a spring in the coupler for God knows why, which is less than a precise coupling and causes wear over time causing a harmonic noise. It's normal actually, by all accounts. I am not a fan of this poor design.

When you go in for this problem do you leave the CAI installed so they can hear it better?
