Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM's North American rear-wheel-drive platform and owner of a first-generation Camaro convertible, was pleased to run through his baby's accomplishments.

Not surprisingly, the V8-equipped Camaro SS delivers better numbers across the board. Chevy's Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the

automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds

and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. "We optimized the shift points," he said.

If it still doesn't add up, sue the magazine for false advertisement I guess? GM didn't make these claims, magazines did to get ratings or something? GM has a PCM/TCM that adjusts/adapts to many things effecting performance accordingly. Or bring your car to me, and I will tell you what is going on, I agree it is slightly underrated, but not to the level you are exclaiming anyway, unless conditions are playing a role of course.
Hi Mike,

GM is claiming 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds. I know my car is slower that my sons 2000 Trans AM with a 5.7 LTR. Which is slower then my 2005 GTO I sold to get this fantastic looking car. Even my dealer says its slower then the others that they have sold, they told this to GM but GM refuses to exknowlege that there is a problem. I guess if they do then they have to recall all the L99's which costs big bucks.

Unfortuntaly I am in Florida and looking for a good tuner and an Extra ECM.

But, have you noticed that very slight differences in the data that MCA is using can lead to totally different outcomes. And, I think you were spot on in your last sentence.

The best and cheapest setup would be a nicely selected cam, full exhaust, intake, and tuning. This combination would net you 100hp for a pretty reasonable price (probably about 5k total cost including installation).

My GTO made 95 rwhp with a nice concervative cam, full exhaust, intake, and tuning. It ran great and sounded unreal. It went from 320 rwhp to 415 rwhp.

There are a few people on here with issues with their car. However, all I keep reading is "My car is slow". "My car can't out run xxx car". The only person who's received hard data is Irpq.

Unfortunately, this may be a case where GM isn't going to budge until they receive the data from the consumer. We're going to need to prove them wrong on this one it seems.

------

rpepka - How fast did your GTO run 0-60? 1/8? 1/4? You're comparing it to a car that we have no values for. Hell, your GTO may run the 1/4 in low 12's.... and then we'd expect the Camaro to run slower.

Provide cold hard data.

Good Point! I never did a thing to it (2005 GTO), I mean Bone Stock and it Kicked my son's butt and ran very well. I never did take it to the track. The Camaro at best is going 0 to 60 with a stop watch in the high 5's to low 6's. Without question is much slower thent the GTO.

The PCM/TCM in the L99 is much more intelligent than your GTO or your sons Transam, it adapts to conditions quite severely. I can dyno my L99 with the engine coolant temperature at 220 degrees, and at 190 degrees and it will make a difference of 25 rwhp, also if the ambient air temps are above 90 degrees, you can expect to lose another 20 rwhp on top of that due to the engine pulling 8-10 degrees of ignition timing. If you get your car tuned it will be more consistant.

Dyno is the only way to know for sure. Most ls's don't really wake until 10k or so.

I agree with Mike in that these kinds of threads are dealing a lot of damage to prospective L99 buyers for no real reason. rpepka, as much as I feel sorry for him, is only complaining about his car, of which there is only one. It would appear that his car is running like crap, and I'll bet you there are several others out there that also run like crap. It happens, in fact it's excpected. There are thousands of other L99s out there, though, and we have to consider how we'd react if this were a post about one of them that just happens to turn exceptionally good numbers. Those are out there, too, and I have confidence that we'll hear about them, too. Ultimately, however, it would be foolish for prospective buyers to give any weight to either individual account.
Personally I'm on the opinion that rpepka is only going to be truly satisfied when he gets that LS7 bolted up, and in a perfect world that's exactly what his GM rep would make happen for him, on their dime, just to hold him as a customer. We all know that ain't going to happen, though, and it's a shame, I suppose, but were I the admin in charge to whom every one of his complaints got routed, and who'd heard the whole story (obviously a GM buying family here), I bet I could get it taken care of for a fairly paltry internal sum and convert him to a lifelong company fanboy in the process.

Of course, as soon as word got loose on the internet about it, the company'd go bankrupt again from everybody and his brother expecting similar treatment. NDA him for four years, maybe?
