O SHI- (Good night 1st Car)

Well, today I found out some really bad news. Apparently my first car, which is currently being driven by my brother is quite literally on it's last legs may meet it's end soon. We've poured so much money into it as a family that my dad is finally at wits end and is considering CFCing it (that's my shorthand Cash for Clunkers) and getting him..

a Ford Focus.

:Facepalm:

"But it's 100 bucks a month after all the rebates... we just may have no other option."

Yeah.. and you're putting two kids through college and saying money is tight. You do have an option: It's called the public transport system on OSU's campus. I've actually started telling THEM to wait it out until I graduate, get a job, buy a camaro, and hand them the keys to the Explorer to trade that in with the Monte. It's kinda stressing me out now.. and not because of that, but the fact that he is my brother after all. :(

Your brother's at OSU?

I'm going to have to agree...why doesn't he just use CABS to get around campus? And COTA will get him to Columbus whenever he wants...

And in all honesty, I walked from East Campus all the way across the Olentangy to West Campus in under 15 minutes. If I can do it, so can he.

Not to mention that finding a parking space at OSU is next to impossible.

I'd walk rather then drive a Focus.

Yeah. Turfgrass Science. I keep telling him to flipping use Pub trans because it's 20x better than here at WMU. The only reason I have a car is because I have to commute 30 miles each way from Kzoo to Battle creek to the airport and the buses stopped going out that way after gas prices dropped back to "sane" levels.

Just because I do it, doesn't mean he has to; but being the big brother I guess I still set the example. Guh. Not to mention he never drives the damn thing more than once every 2-3 weeks if he comes home. And as far as I know he does walk it.. he's just worried about having a way to get home to mommy and daddy. 2x

Seriously, I don't know why my parents can't just pick him up on the one weekend a month he feels the need to come home too. I'm going to have another talk with them about all this. I told them to be wary about all these incentives that companies are putting out, and just to hold on until spring when I buy my Camaro and can hand the Explorer over for him to use until they can secure a good alternative to the Monte and CFC both the Explorer and the Monte Carlo.

I don't know, I was just up there a few days ago for orientation and I was able to walk to wherever I wanted to. I walked to McDonalds from my dorm in less than 15 minutes.

If he's still living on campus, then there really is no reason to have a car. Maybe if he has an apartment, but you could still use COTA to get to classes.

He's moving to Frat village in the fall (DTS..uh boy. How many hospital visits are we gonna hear about THIS year..) and it's right across High Street from the new Student Union going up. I agree as well and I've only been on campus twice. It's no WMU but with what OSU has for pub trans, I don't see the need.

But it also bugs me that my first car is dying.. ;_;

QFT...which was why I asked them if they had any shred of human dignity and would move to a late model used Fusion (pre ZOMGFACELIFTKOOLZ).

Why don't you pay for your own college?
IMO College should be payed by the student and not the parents. It's the student who will be reaping it's benefits for years.

my parents paid for my school... (thanks mom and dad)... You see I think that most kids aren't responsible enough at 18 to do the right thing...

Even a commuter in state school will run you about $3000 a semester. In simple terms thats $500 a month... you could get a kick ass Camaro for that much (if an 18 y/o could even afford that) which is what a lot of 18 y/o kids would opt for over more school. I know there are school loans and bs but I don't feel mom and dad paying for college is a bad thing.

True the students will reap the rewards, but so do the parents...

"... hey so-in-so this is my son, hes an engineer"
-vs-
"... hey so-in-so this is my son... yeah he works at McDonalds"

There is some benefit (pride) for the parents...

It's the parents' responsibility to make sure their child gets a good education.

And how many students do you know who can possibly pay for college? I'm paying for maybe half of my college education. That's all I can afford, and I'll still be in debt for years after.

Actually, I am as of now. They're paying for my brothers while I have my father cosign my loans because I have no credit card. Right now it just wasn't in the cards, what with also running a lease on a 2007 Ford Edge SEL. Not in this day and age..

Right now I've got them more or less backed down after they saw that the monty didn't even qualify for CFC. The Explorer does, so now it's just a waiting game until January when I do hand them the keys to use the truck on a 'new' car for him.

And then scrap the Monte for what it's worth.. ;_;
