I work in the facility that produces the world's largest lower powertrain assemblies. Another one of our facilities makes all the transmissions, and yet another - the engines. We believe that certain components should be considered "core" due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, the IP of the part or process, or the consequences of failure. We have 3 facilities with similar processes. Shafts are turned, splines are either hobbed or rolled, and we have proprietary heat treat processes that require significant experience to operate and maintain. Quality control of the the heat treat is challenging and can only be accomplished through destructive testing. A part is cut to expose the cross section and the hardness is checked at various depths and points along the length of the shaft. A shaft may have different HT specs at different parts along the length, and to make matters worse, material quality at the start of the process is very important. We take samples of finished parts and put them through this inspection, which can take days to finish depending on the workload in that group. If something is found, there could be many units already through assembly, so they all become suspect, through the last part inspected. If a customer finds the failure, it will take even longer to figure it out and the potential lot size of the problem, much larger. Now, imagine an accountant or buyer who thinks he can get these parts in a "developing nation" for half the price. Now there are potential boat loads of bad parts in the pipe by the time a problem is identified. This is my current career, trying to persuade the accountants / buyers that the cost savings they're supporting can have grave consequences, not just for the cost of replacement (and air freight!), but for lost sales as a result of issues exactly like this.

This issue sure caught fire quick. My dealer has not warned me and I must have missed the QC hold by a hair, as I took delivery 7/7.

This "could" be an issue with the HT process, the spline rolling (I'm assuming they're not hobbed), or could be alignment of the transmission itself. I read in one of these posts that the bore in the housing was on the low side, could be rubbing and producing some heat which would weaken the shaft. Anyway, I'm curious to find out what the issue turns out to be. While I'm driving this timebomb, I'm going to take it easy. If I get a chance, I will go to a dealership and do some burnouts in their lot, that way I can skip the whole onstar / flatbet / fedex tranny routine.

One thing that concerns me though. Are all you folks really dumping the clutch at 5000RPM? You're supposed to "slip" it, give the drivetrain a moment to wind up, take 1 second to ease the clutch out.

This thread is polluted. It would be great if we could start a new one with only useful information; vin#, milage, activity that resulted in failure, dealer response and time to fix.

They have to fix this, I can think of many situations where you would not want to lose motivation. My town is full of busy railroad tracks!
This is a great post, BOBSS. I agree with you on the offshore supplier issues; many of the potential problems here are magnified when you extend the supply chain. I have and SS on order, and do recognize this a a serious, if albeit unfortunate, issue. It is not uncommon on new designs. I had a BMW 335i with the new twin turbo inline 6 that needed the high pressure fuel pump replaced twice. Stranded me. Twice. BMW made right on the deal after the second failure and allowed me to purchase any other BMW at dealer cost (except the M cars) . So I now have a 550i and am awaiting on the Camaro to trade my Pathfinder.

GM is doing the correct thing by halting production of the M6 here until they find out the cause of the problem, and it is good to see that happen this soon. BMW placed a boat load of bad high pressure fuel pumps in the 335i before they would face the reality

True, but I'll bet there may be some hold in assembling new vehicles with the M6 until they better understand the problem here. Would only make sense.

Could be but I'm hoping that GM will still produce those cars this week and on!!

And anyways not all of them have a bad shifter!!

You never know all the ones they out in QC may have good tranny's!! They are just taking pre-cautions!!!

ALSO read the title for the M6 on the homepage! it says: Camaro SS SHIPMENT hold!!

So if you go by that then they are still prducing those cars!!

I applaud your positive thinking. But I think it's safe to say SS M6 production is halted until they investigate the issue. I personally wouldn't want them to keep producing them until the issues is solved 100%.

EDIT: I've been corrected.

Yup That's going to be the hard thing for them on this one. Like I said, I'm impressed with their action already - they obviously know how important this car is for them.
